It seems like everybody makes a grunt call now. I bought one of those deer growl calls and what a waste of money, I used it for a couple of seasons and never got a deer to even act like they were interested in it. I'm going back to just a plain grunt call. What do ya'll recommend.

I learned how to just do it with my voice. But, there are some good grunt calls on the market. Years ago I had a Lynch that sounded real good.

I use the Buck Roar grunt call. I have had the same one for 7 years and have called in at least 20 deer in that timeframe that have seen the inside of my freezer. Most people that use grunt tubes have no clue how to use them.

Totally agree with you there.

I was on a deer lease one time and a fellow pulled out his deer grunt tube and started blowing on it in camp. I asked him was that the way he intended on calling deer in the woods? He said yeah? I knew this guy pretty well and knew that giving him coaching advice was not going to work so I took his grunt tube and stomped it in the ground in front of him and everyone, You can imagine the look of WTF he had on his face. I told him I just saved you some endless hours of non deer hunting now don't go out and buy another one and don't whine about me stomping that one.

He didn't and he didn't. He started killing deer after that and I think he realized he was mucking up.

I have a very old-20 years at least-Primos grunt call.

I use it very infrequently and only when a deer is heading away from me and I'm just trying to get him to pause and give me a look.

Like a lot of these kinds of things, I believe they are there to catch the hunter. The doe bleat is the exact same thing. It seems so reasonable to expect it to work.

The best grunt call is no grunt call.

I used the David and hale ex grunter and had success with them during rut

Yea my best success is from the Knight and Hale ez grunter. I had it since 98 and it still work. I also got the new Primos buck roar, not had any luck with it or the can. The can is not loud enough in the woods. They work good during the ruts.

I have an original knight and hale grunt call. Harold came to a ducks unlimited banquet in 1987. They gave it away in a raffle. A friend of my dads won it. He wasn't a hunter, just there for the fellowship. My dad had won a cooler and 12 pack of Budweiser. I was only 15. I grabbed the beer and cooler and walked over to him. I traded him the beer for the grunt call. Harold knight showed me how to blow it. I carried it with me opening day of rifle in 1987 and killed the biggest buck I have ever killed. 11 pointer. I saw him chasing a doe. I blew it 3 times with a pause in between. He walked to within 30 yards and I shot him with a 30-30. Been hunting for a bigger one ever since.
There is a time and place for using a grunt call. Most hunters blow them too loud. I only use em if I know a buck has no chance of coming toward me. Same goes for rattling.

A friend gave me a Tru Talker about 10 years ago. I thought that it was just another gimmick. I watched the DVD that came with it and went up in the woods behind my house just to see what would happen. I only made doe bleats with it (similar to the can calls) and a huge buck came walking in to about 5 yards of my position. I couldn't believe it actually worked. I also called a coyote making fawn bleats. I wasn't hunting, just seeing if it would do anything. It was probably early November. I carry it with me but rarely, if ever, use it while hunting.
