Been Wondering About Something....

I have thought for a while that perhaps bucks become more wary once they shed their velvet. I noticed it again this morning. Two bucks, full brothers were browsing in a field. The younger one was still in full velvet. The oplder had shed most of his. The younger almost ignored me, allowing me to get within 40-yards on foot. The older, one I have been photographing for a month with no problems, was gone the minuute I stopped the truck.

I have seen this on several occasions with other bucks. Is it the shedding of velvet, age or the time of year. Bryan, what do you think?

Maybe the spike in T levels makes them more jumpy? Just a wild guess though

Doesn't shedding velvet itch? It sure looks like it. I guess I'm being anthopomorphic here, but the way some bucks seem to go at it to get the velvet off makes it look to me like it bothers them. How many of us have scratched until we bled and kept right at it? Anyway, If it does itch, that would make them jumpy.

I figured once the horns hardened there would be no itching,or feeling.I also figured that the bloody velvet and flies all over their face would drive them nuts.Maybe thats why some eat the velvet,out of frustration.

Could be the old deer likes little Fords rather than big Dodges.

I think the deer senses the changes in your desires as season gets closer. Before it was "cool, let me get his picture". Now He is sensing the "oh man, sure would look good next to some potatoes and gravy". Kind of like squirrels, deer season: looks like a circus in the woods; during actual squirrel season: hide undergound.

How do you know they are full brothers?

I thouoght tyhey may have been sisters but gave that up. Seriously, I don't other than body characs. and same mudder.

And urban, it aint that cause I would not shoot either one.
