I've been working on some birds on a piece of land I have to hunt. There are fields, not in the property, but just off.
I've been messing with these birds for two or three days and they've beaten me, but I've only bumped one tom one time. I I thought I had them figured out, so I went in this morning hoping the rain would hold off. I got to my listening spot and I heard a bird gobbling at 5:45 but not where I expected him. I got set up about 80 yards from the tree, because these birds have been pitching only about 40 to 50 yards when they come off roost. At 6 o'clock, I did some putts and clucks and slapped my hat against me and the under story and he gobbled. A few minutes later, I did some cutting and soft yelps and he gobbled, but another bird gobbled too. About five minutes went by and I yelped again, and they both gobbled again and cut me off a few minutes later he pitched, but when he pitched I saw him flying over top of me to the back of the property. I waited a couple minutes yelped again, and the second bird was still on the roost and gobbled. A few minutes later, he pitched the other way, and since I knew where the other bird went, I went after him. When I got back there to set up, I bumped a bird out of a big oak tree, and wasn't sure if it was him or not. I called but nothing I called again and the second bird gobbled from back about where I was. Then I was kicking myself for moving. I went ahead and got set up facing back that way and called and he gobbled and sounded closer. About a minute later he was at 30 yards and dead.
I think he was a double beard. However, the second beard looked either rotted or something happened to it. Only 3-4 strands are left.
The main beard measured 9.5", the other one longest strand measured 4.5".
Spurs were pearly white looking 7/8".
