When you've taken a bird which do you look forward to seeing most when you get to him?

For me it's all about the spurs. I love getting to a gobbler and checking out what kind of hooks he's got.

My uncle has a great line regarding gobblers - "You can't say he's yours until you've got both hands around his neck."
Spurs - give you a better idea of just how old he is.
I also love to see the sun shining on their feathers.

I love nothing better than a full fan coming to me,.. but when its on the ground its spurs,...unless i see more than 1 beard that is!

Spurs, on my farm this year in scouting I've seen 7 big gobblers with 7-12 inch beards, can't wait to see what the spur length is on the big one! :grin:

I must be too much of a novice still, which makes sense considering I have yet to kill my first, but I get pumped when I see one with a long beard and don't even think much of the spurs. I guess that will change as I really get into turkey hunting next month.

Not really. You're right on track imo.

The beard is how we are identifying a legal bird. If three birds come in together, I'm taking the one with the paint-brush beard, and I'm not studying spurs through binocs.

Spurs are just a bonus. I have killed a few that after the kill I discovered that their spurs were either broken off or they just had nubs. Didn't take away from the hunt in any way!

I just worry about the beard.
When they are clicking as they walk in I know the spurs are good ones because they are hitting each other.
