Got a friend that has bear pictures on his trail cameras that he as not seen in the 7 years he's leased the property. One looks to be a big one 200-300 LBs, hard to tell. I hunted with him 4 years ago there & never saw any. He's concerned about walking into his stands in the dark.

Anyone faced this kind of thing in TN with black bears?

He should have nothing to worry about unless he wanders between a sow and some cubs. A bears nose make a deer's nose seem average. They will typically smell you and steer well clear, or be gone before you arrive. I have had several on my farm on camera and have never worried one bit about them personally.
 
Oh yeah, my tactic is put a broad head in his vitals. Find the food and you found bears. Early bow season is just like deer. There gonna be in the white oaks. Look for scat and climbing sign and you found them.
 
Come hunt the Ocoee unit of South Cherokee, you'll see a lot more bear than deer. Never had a problem with one other than trying to figure out how to get a 300lb piece of Velcro to the truck that's five miles away! Those things don't even drag going downhill!
 
Just a reminder about the bear reserves. Illegal to take bears in them. Know the boundaries. Page 63 of new hunting guide. Bears cannot be taken in Polk in the area to the south of the Ocoee River/Lake and north of the TN/GA state line. Bound by the National Forest boundaries on the east and west. Tons of bear there. Not huntable.

I'd be willing to bet that if they did a study, there's probably more bear per square mile on the reserve than there are in Cade's Cove. Especially after the dog hunts open.

In the north Cherokee one morning a big bear started climbing the tree I was in in my climber. I didn't want to scare any deer that have been near so I just tapped the base of the climber and whispered " go away". He climbed down, went about 10 yards away and just looked at me like he was deciding if he was going to eat me. Then he just wandered off.
 
Had one many years ago do the same while hunting Cohutta in GA. It got within 5' of the bottom of my climber before he paused and climbed back down. I had cocked the hammer of my T/C Renegade and wasn't letting him get any closer, luckily for him (and maybe me) he didn't come any closer. That got my heart rate up and then to beat all he left on the same trail I had to use to get back to my truck not 10 minutes before dark. I was a nervous wreck on the way out with my flashlight on a swivel and finger on the trigger. Most scared I'd ever been in my 17 years to that point.
