Food Plots Beans and Peas up in 5 days

Planted 2 acres of Eagle Soybeans surrounded by Iron Clay Peas/Sorghum/Sunflowers on the outer 20 feet of the field. Trying something new beyond pure Eagle beans in my summer plot.

One more field to get in for summer.

Hope it turns out well for ya - I tried Eagles a few years ago, and the deer didn't let them get more than six inches tall :-(

Progress Update

Planted on May 23. I really happy with the field thus far. I hope it keeps raining.

Planted another acres of Eagle Beans today.

Weeds came on strong this week. Will need to spray next week. Deer have preferencially clobbered the Eagle soy beans and barely touched the iron clay peas. They did eat a large number of young sunflowers.

That's very similar to Whitetail Institute's "Power Plant" and also Pennington seed's "Spring/Summer Deer Mix", both of which I've planted several times. They are my favorite food plot planting because of the volume they produce and how much the deer use them. I don't worry too much about the weeds because deer were eating weeds long before food plots came along anyhow. You should have a 6 foot high jungle before long.

My plan was to use the peas/sunflower mix to take the pressure off the Eagle Soybeans until they established, however, as you can see the deer walk right thru the knee deep iron clay peas/sunflower mix to the Eagle beans.

Two years ago the Eagle beans had so much pressure they never got more than a few inches high. Last year I added another 1/2 acre and the Eagle beans made it to 18" high and they had lots of seeds that the deer used late in the year, although not much due to the acorns.

I dont know what changed but the deer are back this year working over the beans, and I have more field area this year than last. The beans inside the cage are 12" high already showing its not a farming issue. Seems like there is more field use already this year than last.

Anyone else seeing the same thing????

Been reading about Eagles Manager mix-southern whitetail thicket which is
More vine soybean. It is more deer resistant and drought resistant.
Also it will stay green thought 2 or 3 frost

Mine are the "large lad" variety. I've tried the other varieties years past and don't see a significant difference that comes with the step up in price. All the Eagles keep coming back after getting grazed to the stalk, but they cant seem to get ahead of the deer this year.

Status today. Weeds under controls. Beans flattened by deer (see cage growth)

No apparent browsing on iron clay pea/Sunflower mix as of yet. Hopefully to sorghum tops will bet them interested later in the summer.

Rain finally fell in Roane County the streams are running like its springtime.

Recent rains gave the beans a boost. But deer keeping them in check.

The "jungle" from power plant type mixes is what I like. Bush hog a strip through the middle and disc. Sow some fall seed and have a dandy place to hunt. They like to bed in the jungle with food nearby.

Did u use inoculant on you beans or peas?

No innoculant. pH is around 7 so I didnt need it. I used a spreader followed by a homemade drag. The drag is an old forktruck mast with some teeth welded too it, so it pushed the seeds into rows.

other than my buddy discing up the soil, it is all done with a UTV

Weeds are winning and the deer are keeping the beans knee high. The deer are now in the iron clay peas and eating the tops off of the sorghum.
