Beale St observation

I have given up on finding any really good food on Beale St.

If someone here can recommend a place, I'll give it a try if I ever go back.

x2...any decent food period. I work downtown and act as if Beale does not exist (unfortunately, so do many others that work down here).

I think Performa really made some short lived profit decisions in the last 10 years with the direction of Beale Street and now it is backfiring on them with the mounting reputation of being "unwelcoming" for families. Kicking the center for Southern Folklore out and letting stupid chains like Wet Willie's, Coyote Ugly, and Hardrock Cafe come in definitely put a hit on the uniqueness and local flavor. Kicking the street performers out, a tradition since the beginning of Beale St, was another bad move. The fact that there is no Blues music to be found on Beale St, the very thing that is is famous for, is the most slap-your-forehead-in-wonder moment to be had in Memphis. You walk down Beale Street and the bars are blasting hip hop, Karaoke, etc. Give me one good reason why Robert Belfour, T-Model Ford and anybody with the last name Kimbrough or Burnside don't have weekly gigs down there. That's insane.

Local gastropub (not on Beale it's on Main) has buffalo frog legs now.

Kings Palace has really good gumbo. Don't normally eat bbq on beale.

Went to Rum Boogie Cafe a few weeks ago and had their "award winning gumbo" that had catfish, gator, etc. It was ok. Not really award winning, but ok.

That restraunt with Pig With an Attitude isn't all that great. They had a place in Millington a few years ago. The bbq beans looked more like white beans in some water. OMG! Went once and never went back.

For an area with so many places claiming to offer "Memphis-style barbecue", there is disturbingly little aroma or sight of barbecue pit smoke on Beale.

The only thing I've observed on Beale Street in a while are the "Gunbusters" signs everywhere. I quit going to that overpriced tourist trap a long time ago. If I'm drinking downtown, it's at Kudzu's.
