beach camping

contemplating a fishing/camping trip to the outer banks. i have never camped at the beach. any tips?

The Outer Banks are nice. I think that there is a campground at Oregon Inlet. Are you going to use a tent or a camper?

tent. trailers are not camping ;)

Might I suggest bringing 42 Thermacells and a bug tamer ?

Not sure of the Outer Banks but everytime we beach camped in FL the No See-ums or skeeters ate us alive.

One trip we took to burning shoes in the campfire for the smoke and had to retreat to the tent an hour before sunset or get swarmed.

If you have a good strong wind you should be fine. Gritty but the bugs wont eat ya.

i am aware of the campgrounds and such. my concerns are staking a tent in sand and the wind.

They recommend extra long stakes if you are on the beach or in the sand, which is just about anywhere there. I have seen the winds get very high very quickly. If I was going to be in a tent, I would try to find a place on the sound side instead of the ocean side. When were you planning to go?

We used to go every year in OCT. but we haven't got to go in the past 2 or 3 years. We stayed in a condo at Nags Head and never camped. The next time we go we will probably take a camper.

we have been once quite a while back. it has to be spring/early summer. i was dragged kicking and screaming to fla one year in oct. that's deer season!!!

I hope that I will be able to go early next year. I don't want to go after school is out and have to deal with the crowds. I hope to have a motor home by then.

I like camping on the beach, bring a tarp, lay it on the sand and put tent on tarp with a lip sticking out the front, allows you to have a "porch" of sorts to knock sand off before getting into the tent. Bug stuff is a MUST!, thermocell and spray. Be prepared for heavy breezes/winds so no need for table clothes and plan meals and such around that fact, everything that can, will get blown off the picinic table! Rope for the swimsuits and beach towels to hang dry on. Extra long stakes and extra stakes for the tent, extra rope for extra staking. Broom!! More bug stuff....never seem to have enough!!

we were thinking about that too. there is some island i can't remember right off but it has wild horses on it. I think you ferry out. one thing instead of stakes you can use "deadmen" for anchors. take a couple sticks about two foot long. tie them together in the shape of a cross and bury them in the sand. they won't pull out like tent stakes.
