Local Spring Hill fire fighter was bitten while off duty hitting some trails...

Via Spring Hill Fire Dept. FB page: Engineer Kyle Watson was off duty yesterday hiking on a trail in Maury county. He was bitten by a rattle snake on his finger multiple times. He then passed out and hit his head on a rock. It took crews more than an hour to get him out. He was flown to Vanderbilt and is in the intensive care unit this morning. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

He had to be messing with it to be bitten several times. Not that ive never poked a rattler with a long stick before.
But if anyone thinks that snakes aren't out with as warm as its been they should stay out of the woods

My two cents, let's give this poor chap the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was messing with it, maybe not, you can't say that for sure just based on what we know...stranger things have happened in the wild. Hope he's ok.

I don't suppose so, but I also don't suppose he wanted multiple rattler bites...or said another way, assuming (being a rural county firefighter) he knew what it was even if he did get close to it trying to catch it or something I bet you he was trying to get it off / away immediately after the first bite. It doesn't say this, but I wonder if the fall / passing out happened after the first bite...and the snake kept biting as he wasn't removing his hand. I've never been bit by any poisonous snake so I don't know what their habit is.

He could be a total dumb ass, but I just tend to want to give folks the benefit of the doubt. And being a family man I can't help wondering if he has wife/kids.

Do appreciate the reminder - at least one place where I hunt has reported big ol rattlers, and honestly I haven't been paying attention the last few weeks!

yeah i kinda figured it was a reflex bite or he was handling it, that's why i asked the question. timber rattlers are not naturally aggressive and ive seen a lot of them where i live. and yes, a twitching dead snake will bite you just the same as a live snake and so will a snapping turtle.

and to top it off he killed the snake on a WMA.

A Spring Hill firefighter found out just how dangerous a rattlesnake can be even with its head cut off.

Kyle Watson was evacuated by helicopter from a remote trail at the Creeks Bend Natural Wildlife Area in Maury County, when he came across a juvenile timber rattlesnake while hiking with his wife and three children.

There were a number of people on the trail at the time. Watson was concerned that hikers would be in danger with the rattler so close to the trail.

"I decided to cut the head off the snake with a kayak paddle," Watson said.

The snake was only a few feet long. After Watson decapitated the snake, he wanted to show his children the head. Unable to pick the snake's head up with the paddle, Watson used his hand. What happened next could only be described as terrifying.

"The head turned and struck me on the finger. It latched on and I slung it off," Watson said.

The snake packed a poisonous punch. Venom began to course through his body.

"It took about 10 seconds for the burning sensation to start shooting through my arm. Within 60 seconds, I was unconscious. I fell on the trail and hit the back of my head on a rock. I was knocked out. In a remote area, bleeding from the head and bitten by a snake," Watson said.

Creeks Bend Natural Wildlife Area encompasses thousands of acres of pristine land by the Duck River, but it's also miles from help.

Following a quick response by Maury County Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Watson was stabilized in the field.

He was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he was quickly put on an IV drip of anti-venom serum.

A toxicologist with Vanderbilt Medical Center told Channel 4 the only treatment that can save someone bitten by a poisonous snake is anti-venom serum. Nothing else will work.
