Hey guys im looking at doing my first build and i was looking for some input and suggestions on barrels. I'm going to do it on a 700 action in .308. I plan on it being a hunting rifle but also a rifle i will shoot alot too so probably a slightly heavier barrel, maybe shorter barrel to cut down on weight. i would like to spend around $300 preferably less on the barrell itself.
what are some of the different barrels you have had expierence with? likes/dislikes etc. all info and suggestions will be helpful.
thanks in advance

I am wanting to rebarrel my rem 700 lss in 300 win mag with either a lilja or a hart barrel. Leaning toward lilja but have heard great things about hart barrels.

I've got a mcgowen barrel ordered for my savage. I should have it in a couple of weeks.

Hart makes a nice barrel, I just can't justify the increased cost (maybe they have come down), over a PacNor or similar. Just about any reputable custom barrel will shoot a lot better than I can.

Stumpy, the first barrel that comes to mind for the price and quality is Brux. The wait time has increased because of happy return customers. Kreiger is also a great maker that is cut rifled as well. The #4 contour sounds like it may be what you are looking for as it would make a super nice, accurate package. Rock barrels are sure worth a look too, especially in 30 caliber.

Rock Creek and Kreiger are about a 6 months out. I'm bout to order a Rock for my .300 RUM. Midway has the Shilen select match in stock now I do believe.

Lilja will probably have your barrel in stock. I just got a #5 contour from him for a .260 build. For a slightly heavy sporter like you describe I'd go #4 or fluted #5.

Something else I was wondering concerning contour. The barrel I have in mind is similar to the varmint barrel on a SPS 700 varmint. What contour would be similar to this? What are some of your opinions on barrel length. Again I'm going to be hunting with this rifle. But I also like shooting long range alot. What's the happy medium lol?

I'm having a .243 built by Short Action Customs. I chose a Bartlein 5R, 1/8" twist, Remington Varmint contour. I chose 24" finish length. 20 to 24" length should be a happy medium for you.

When ordering the barrel, tell the maker you want to duplicate the Remington Varmint taper This will help alot especially if reusing the same stock. It can be alot of headache for the new tube to be so different from the stock inletting for the barrel.

This is the contour chart from Brux`s website. They offer the Remington Varmint contour.
