My mzl is old and I've never fired it. It is closed breech so I wasn't site hoe to clean it so I haven't cleaned it yet. I was reading earlier that rust can cause a type of obstruction. I was going to clean it but I had never heard this. Also, what about pitting? Someone had written on here that they had to retire a mzl because the barrel was pitted. When is a barrel to pitted to safely shoot?
 
It's not that it is unsafe to shoot a rifle with a pitted barrel, it's because it can really mess up accuracy. I've had two that were pitted really bad, one wouldn't shoot into any kind of a group beyond 30 yards but the other one shoots just fine.

As far as cleaning a really rusted rifle, wrap a solvent soaked patch around a cleaning brush and run it down the barrel. Change patches every few strokes and keep doing it until they come out clean. May take 30 minutes or so but it works.
 
Try a good cleaning with Kroil from Kano Labs. Let the bore soak for atleast 30 minutes in Kroil before giving it a good scrubbing.

You can also try JB BoreShine with the blue label on a snug jag/patch. Add a little Kroil to the patch first and then the JBs. Change patches no more than every 25 strokes. The bore may need 100 passes to get out mild amounts of rust.

EvapoRust works also but it might also remove the bluing. Its water based so it needs to be flushed out with water and dried before scrubbing.
 
also, it seems if I ran a patch around a cleaning brush the patch would get lost at the bottom. Does this happen or should I even worry, I beleieve the breech is fixed. It is a sidelock.

My uncle got a Hawken for payment for work years ago and it looked like it had never been cleaned. He spent probably an hour cleaning it and he could bust a gallon jug every time at 100 yards using the sights.
 
I used a good ole SOS pad from under the kitchen sink. I pulled the paid apart and took a small portion and wrapped it around a cleaning brush that I had in my gun cabinet for a 45 caliber. I added bore cleaner and of course the SOS pad has its own soap. I worked the barrel like I was churning butter by hand, replacing the SOS on the brush a few times. The barrel has pitting but it looked uniform up and down the barrel and also looked perfectly clean. The gun is very accurate.
