i am looking to get a 308 this spring and most of the ones i have found that i liked are come with a 20" barrel. Is there a real drop off going from a 24" to a 20" barrel minus some velocity?

I was looking at the Howa 308 ranchland compact predator series 308
 
You might lose a little velocity but it will not be enough to matter. Plus it will handle a lot better with the shorter barrel. Some guys on SnipersHide shoot the 20" barrel out to 1000yds.
 
You will lose some velocity with a .308, but not as much as the big magnums would. The .308 is a very efficient cartridge, and if you handload then you can probably select a faster burning powder to make up for this. Once you get into ranges past 200-300 yards, it really doesn't matter how fast you are shooting, as trigger time and shooter skill are all that matters here. The extra 50-100fps will not effect the trajectory enough to effect a hit or miss at that range, that is where knowing the ballistics of your specific rifle comes in.
 
i have a 270 now with a 24" barrel and it is without a doubt a shooter but for whatever reason i REALLY want a 308 instead.
 
20" is just fine in the .308, esp with the lighter bullets.

I love mine- it's a heavy bbld rem 700 I picked up over the summer. 150BT's at 2825 at the muzzle. So far everything I've pointed it at has bang-flopped.

I've shot mine out to 700 yards, and it'll do just fine at that distance if it isn't windy.

I have read it is about 25 to 40 fps per inch . Not enough to worry about ,i have a 270 with 20 inch barrel and love it.
 
I have loaded a Rem Model 7 20 inch 308 for well over ten years,,I have 2-3 different loads I can get over 2750 with the 168 Sierra,,when I am going into a new place to hunt that I havent scouted it is the rifle I reach for,,

You should get even less drop in velocity with the 308 and its related cartridges. I have both a 243 and a 260 REM Ruger compacts, which have only 16.5" barels, and I only lose about 18 fps/inch compared to published data.

I really like the Howa 20 inch rifle in the Hogue stock; it's on my short list for next rifle (though I'd probably go with the 7mm-08, since I already have the 308 in addition to the 243 and 260.)
