Barrel Length for Dove Hunting

to a certian degree the length of barrel on a shotgun does not matter as to pattern, the choke will take care of pattern

I shoot a 28" barrel in the dove field, a Rem 1187 with an "Briley" improved modified choke, sometimes I will back down to a modified choke

when I shot skeet, the gun of choice was with a 28" barrel, now many are moving to the 30", a skeet target is usually shot at the 21yard range.

a longer barrel will give you a better sight plain thus increasing accuracy and also making the apparent lead look shorter

mossy 500 with a 24" for years,bought a 28" barrel from nekkid buck & find i track better with it,for low pressure birds imp & for high flyin jets full choke with # 6's

I think longer sight-plane is better, but just IMO. If you have a 24, I don't wanna sit by ya in the dove field or the duck blind. :) Whenever I see one in a duck blind, I go to the farthest end from 'em.

I've always heard about the longer sight plain helping with accuracy, but had never given thought to barrel length affecting lead. Good info.

remember, it makes the lead "look shorter", it does not decrease the actual lead needed

My sporting clays O/U has 32" barrels, and I really enjoy it dove hunting too (I actually shoot skeet with it also). The action on a O/U is much shorter than the receiver on a pump or semi-auto, so the longer barrels on a O/U don't really increase the overall length of the gun as much as you think.

Unfortunately, I don't shoot clays or birds often enough anymore to "stay in the groove" and I have a tendency to slow my swing, so I like longer barrels (32" on O/U, 30" on my 870s / 1100's).
