What's your procedure?

I've done the shoot one clean, shoot two clean, shoot three clean, all the way up to ten then clean and then shoot as normal and clean. While I am doing this I am wondering why I am I doing this lol.

I will admit I am not OCD about keeping the inside of a barrel clean. I can understand if I were shooting competition but all my rifles are strictly hunting only rifles and seldom shoot over 100 yards with maybe the occasional shot out to 200 or 300 yards. Where I hunt here in East TN it's so thick most places I can't see past 50 yards. So if you're not shooting competition and were strictly using a rifle for hunting purposes only what would you do? What is your break in cleaning solution(s) and process of choice?
 
To answer your question, I wouldn't worry about it on a hunting gun. In fact, I have some fine shooting guns that I didn't break in. I just cleaned them and started shooting. Granted these are fairly good barrels I'm doing this with.

If I break in a barrel, I shoot one then clean for 5 shots, 3x shoot 5 clean. Some would argue that you're just eating up barrel life "breaking it in."
 
I've done the barrel break in thing on rifles in the past. As infoman stated, I have rifles that never got broke in that are great shooters. My most accurate rifle never got broke in. I see no real benefit to it and don't believe it makes any difference so I don't put forth the effort anymore.
 
Lilja recommends a very specific break in sequence for their barrels.

I also have done it both ways but if time permits I lke to follow Lilja's procedures, which follow:

We recommend that your new Lilja rifle barrel be properly broken-in to obtain the best accuracy. A proper break-in will help ensure that your barrel will clean easily in the future and that you will achieve maximum accuracy potential. Please follow these important instructions.

We are concerned with two types of fouling: copper fouling, which is caused by bullet jacket material being left in the barrel, and powder fouling. During the first few rounds a lot of copper fouling will be left in the barrel. It is important to remove this fouling completely, after each shot, to help prevent a build-up later on. Powder fouling is ongoing, but easy to remove. Do not use moly-coated bullets during the break-in procedure.

Break-in Procedure

For an effective break-in the barrel should be cleaned after every shot for the first 10-12 rounds or until copper fouling stops. Our procedure is to push a cotton patch that is wet with solvent through the barrel. This will remove much of the powder fouling and wet the inside of the barrel with solvent. Next, wet a bronze brush (not a nylon brush) with solvent and stroke the barrel 5-10 times. Follow this by another wet patch and then one dry patch. Now soak the barrel with a strong copper removing solvent until all of the blue mess is removed from the barrel. The copper fouling will be heavy for a few rounds and then taper off quickly in just one or two shots. Once it has stopped or diminished significantly it is time to start shooting 5 shot groups, cleaning after each one. After 25-30 rounds clean at a normal interval of 10-25 rounds. Your barrel is now broken-in.

Gale McMillan, of McMillan Stocks fame, was one of the finest barrel-makers and benchrest shooters of all time. Here he argues that elaborate barrel break-in procedures do more harm than good.

As a barrel maker I have looked in thousands of new and used barrels with a bore scope and I will tell you that if every one followed the prescribed [one shot, one clean] break-in method, a very large number would do more harm than good. The reason you hear of the gain in accuracy is because if you chamber a barrel with a reamer that has a dull throater instead of cutting clean sharp rifling it smears a burr up on the down wind side of the rifling. It takes from one to two hundred rounds to burn this burr out and the rifle to settle down and shoot its best. Any one who chambers rifle barrels has tolerances on how dull to let the reamer get and factories let them go longer than any competent smith would.

Another tidbit to consider--take a 300 Win Mag that has a life expectancy of 1000 rounds. Use 10% of it up with your break-in procedure. For every 10 barrels the barrel-maker makes he has to make one more just to take care of the break-in. No wonder barrel-makers like to see this. Now when you flame me on this please [explain] what you think is happening to the inside of your barrel during the break in that is helping you.

Consider this: every round shot in breaking-in a barrel is one round off the life of said rifle barrel. No one has ever told me the physical reason of what happens during break-in firing. In other words what, to the number of pounds of powder shot at any given pressure, is the life of the barrel. No one has ever explained what is being accomplished by shooting and cleaning in any prescribed method. Start your barrel off with 5 rounds and clean it thoroughly and do it again. Nev Maden, a friend down under that my brother taught to make barrels was the one who came up with the [one shot one clean] break-in method. He may think he has come upon something, or he has come up with another way to sell barrels. I feel that the first shot out of a barrel is its best and every one after that deteriorates [the bore] until the barrel is gone. If some one can explain what physically takes place during break-in to modify the barrel then I may change my mind. As the physical properties of a barrel don't change because of the break-in procedures it means it's all hog wash. I am open to any suggestions that can be documented otherwise if it is just someone's opinion--forget it.

I asked him how he figured it would help and his reply was if they shoot 100 rounds breaking in this barrel that's total life is 3000 rounds and I make 1000 barrels a year just figure how many more barrels I will get to make. He had a point; it definately will shorten the barrel life. I have been a barrel maker a fair amount of time and my barrels have set and reset benchrest world records so many times I quit keeping track (at one time they held 7 at one time) along with High Power, Silhouette, Smallbore national and world records and my instructions were to clean as often as possible preferably every 10 rounds. I inspect every barrel taken off and every new barrel before it is shipped with a bore scope and I will tell you all that I see far more barrels ruined by cleaning rods than I see worn out from normal wear and tear. I am even reading about people recommending breaking-in pistols. As if it will help their shooting ability or the guns'.

This is the most rational explanation of the no-break in thought process I've read & I agree 100%

Lance, I agree with what your post is saying. I think the same goes for constantly trying new loads in search of the optimum accuracy a rifle is capable of. Especially in the large capacity for bore diameter cartridges with a limited barrel life. I got lucky and found 2 loads with my 257 Weatherby real early on that would shoot .6moa three shot groups consistently. Some would keep shooting to try and get 3/8" groups. I am more practical in that I know the 257 is extra hard on barrels and the accuracy I'm getting is way better than I need for deer anyhow. I've got a rifle that will outlast me if I just use the loads already developed and hunt with it rather than burn it up testing.

I've wondered too what is supposed to be happening with barrel break-in procedures. You've got a clean barrel that you are shoving a bullet down at 3,000fps. By cleaning every shot, the barrel is clean every shot for some magic number of shots. How does that make the bore smoother? If anything, leaving dirt or grit in there would polish out roughness in the bore. That's how lapping compound works and is in fact what some people do with bore lapping. Several bullets with fine lapping compound is fired until the desired effect is achieved. I have done these break-in's (Not lapping with compound) once or twice but quit doing it some time ago. I'm pretty sure I did do it with my Remingon 700 Varmint 220 Swift. I MAY have with the 700 Varmint 17 Remington but not sure.
