Just picked up a browning abolt 3 from bass pro. Great deal at $200 off msrp and a $100 factory rebate, $299 for a browning rifle is pretty good in my book.
Anyway, this is the first rifle I have ever bought new and was wondering what you guys recommend as far as the first however many rounds through it.
Any certain type of ammo to use or avoid?
Cleaning after certain amount of shots? And cleaning with what?
I have always heard different techniques, but have always either had rifles from way back or bought used ones. Thanks for any input.
 
Besides cleaning it good before you shoot it the first time, I'd just sight her in and rock on. All breaking a barrel in does is smooth out some of the rough spots in the barrel from when it was manufactured. A good lapping with JB Bore Paste will accomplish that task without the cost of a box or two of shells (and loss of barrel life).

If you shoot a few shots every year (sighting in and hunting) and clean it at the end of each season you'll break the barrel in eventually over a few years and not all at once. It's a hunting rifle, not a paper puncher.
 
Follow RubDuck's recommendations, particularly the JB paste if you can.

Only thing to avoid is do not overheat the barrel. Sometimes that can create issues.


Be very interested in learning of how the AB3 shoots, feels, etc.
 
Haven't shot it yet but it feels great to hold. The recoil pad is the same one that comes on the x bolt and I really like it. The bolt fits tightly and works really smooth. Even though it is Brownings "entry level" rifle it seems to be very well made. Nothing seems loose or clumsy like some of the other brand rifles in the price range. The safety is the only thing that doesn't feel like my other browning rifles. You can operate the bolt with the gun on safe, which is new from browning. It does use different bases than others which kind of irritates me, like a new phone having to have a different charger or something. Of course bass pro didn't have bases to fit so I'll have to order some. I'm excited to see how if shoots and will post here how it does.
 
i do all my rifles the same



clean it real good

fire 10 rds cleaning after each shot with butches bore shine then kroil

then fire 5 3 round groups cleaning after each three shots


after that i clean it like once ever 2-3 years or when accuracy goes away

Thanks for the replies everyone. Like I said, first new in box rifle so I wasn't sure what needed to be done, if anything.
 
I'm sure 90% of hunters when they buy a new gun just shoot them. If say they don't even swab them out before shooting them. If factories test fire their rifles before selling them anything left in the barrel during the machining process is gone anyway other than sharp edges
