I shot the Barnes for several years. Not super impressed with the performance on game. Last season shot a smaller deer @ 15 yards quartering away. Perfect shot through the vitals out the far shoulder. Deer still ran about 75 to 100 yards. Giving the 300gr. sst a try this year.
You'll just have to shoot other bullets and see. If other bullet are as accurate out of your gun, then yes there are others out there that will kill a deer just as dead. Personally, the Barnes shoot by far the best out of my gun, so for me, they're worth it.
Personally i shoot barnes out of every rifle ive got. I have never used anything that compares. Most all my buddies on my lease have switched to barnes in there muzzle loaders Will other bullets kill them? Sure! Where i hunt they can run 20 yards in any direction and be in a briar filled jungle. I like for them to be very close and barnes does that for me.

Heres one pulled from a 200 lb 8 point that was quartering to me and i shot him mid shoulder and it lodged in the offside rear just under skin. He ran about 50 yards.
Shockwaves and SSTs have killed a lot of deer. As have XTPs, Powerbelts, Noslers, Gold Dots ect. But when you consider a Barnes will retain nearly 100% of it's weight, expand more uniformly and are inherently more accurate via the processing method, then yes I think there is a very strong argument they are superior to the Shockwaves.
FYI, I've killed deer with both and there was really no comparison.
