Bare shaft

I tried shooting some bare shaft 32inch 400 heavy hunters through my left hand 55lb @30 inches recurve with a flipper style rest and 3 under today. at the current nock they kicked up high nose diving and landing below target by 6 to 12 " -/+ but straight under ever time. Moving nock up made it worse . Going down remained the same until at a certain point it completely changed and would kick out right bad making a D shape arrow flight path to the target and landing left ( acting as a weak arrow ) of aiming point but didn't nose dive. I never could find a middle ground between the two . What's up ??

Is your rest one of the full rubber ones like the Bear Weather rest or does it have an actual metal arm covered in plastic that pushes out of the way by the feathers passage? This means a lot.

It's similar to a bear weather rest . It's plastic and I think it's a trophy ridge

I'm going old school here.
stick some feathers on it and see what it does. it may show weak shaft but I think you are over-spined. also check your brace height and make sure it is falling in the recommended range.

some old guys I know told me " you young guys overthink this arrow selection too much. back in the better days we didn't worry about bare shaft shooting, FOC and all that other b--- s---. we didn't shoot arrows without feathers when we hunted so we tested our arrows with feathers on them. if you want to make an arrow fly right, you got to have the feathers on them."
they went on to say even the right arrow wont fly right if you don't have the brace height right.

it took me several years for me to understand what they were telling me. I'm shooting for hunting, not the Olympics.

I agree . My fletched arrows are hit decent out to 20 yards . God willing I'll make my first attempt hunting with traditional archery in the morning but I am still searching for ways to improve accuracy while learning all I can about what makes a stick and string work. I am going to stick some have points on the bare shaft and see if spine improves or gets worse

^^This is good advice. Now I don't use an elevated rest, but if I did and was having your issue I'd drop the nock height down to dead level with the rest and rotate the arrow to have the chocolate chip cookie feather pointed in. Either way I agree with Eddie on this. Stick some feathers on your arrows and see what it does for you. I think bare shafting is over rated. I'm not shooting deer with bare shafts, so I see no need to tune with them.
