Second year in a row that a nice buck was killed on a 1 acre wood lot that adjoins our 800 acre lease. We have 100s of pictures of these bucks 1/2 a mile away from this guys property and know for a fact he is pouring out corn to lure the deer down to him. As of the past weekend he has limited out on bucks that came off our lease. LOL Think he has a brother and a nephew that hunt the 1 acre also.

Anyone else have this problem and how have you dealt with it?

Out of curiosity, how do you KNOW he is baiting deer? Just because he has killed 2 nice bucks on a small piece of property next to your 800 acres? I only ask because adjacent to my 250 acre family farm is a 1/4 acre patch of woods that is almost too thick to walk through. Over the years we have killed several nice bucks either heading to that spot or coming from it. Almost all of these bucks have been killed during gun season when the pressure on our farm ramps up. Another spot a little farther (1/2 mile) off our farm has a 1/2 acre cedar patch in it. Two years ago, two of our 3 big hitlist bucks were killed by a dad and his son hunting the edges of the cedars. Moral of the two stories is that the right small patches of land can be the perfect sanctuaries for pressured deer.

However, if you have evidence (legal of course) then I would contact the local warden and discuss your concerns with him. I would just want more to go on than "he has limited out on bucks that came off of our lease".

Nothing special about his acre steep hardwoods just like ours. Haven't saw the corn because I don't have permission to go on his property but he has told at least 2 members that is what is going on. They discouraged him from baiting by telling him I would probably turn him in if he continued.

I had rather resolve this without bothering the GW. Any ideas?

gw is only way you will resolve it because he is going to do what is working on his place and if th gw doesn't find anything then let it be

Bother the warden? I be he would rather get that call than a bear in the trash at 2 am. Call it in or take it on the chin is about all you can do.

Thought about thumbtacks and a box of dryer sheets pinning them on every tree right down the line?

Heck, I'm not mad at the guy but I will say its frustrating, knowing what he is doing. Wish I hadn't been told.

I have never understood how pictures of a deer on 1 piece of property makes those deer belong on that property. I hunt 50 acres and see different bucks coming and going all the time. Several good funnels,a creek, and good travel routes. The deer belong to whoever Legally shoots them. Illegal deer belong to TWRA to decide what to do with them. I've eaten some good poached meat at Fall Creek Falls wild food fest. :)
If you know he is baiting and breaking the law .Would it not be your responsibility as a ethical hunter to either talk to him or the G.W..??? Listen to your heart and let your conscience be your guide.Sounds like you already know but need some encouragement.

Agreed

Its the wardens job to be bothered with that sort of stuff. Give him a call. The worst that will happen is he wont come or he wont find anything. And dont go on and feel like if the dude is baiting, that its unfair and illegal but not a huge deal. Lots of people sympathize with baiters but wont do it themselves. It is against the law and it hurts the deer herd. So yeah..... call the warden.

Well, wish it were as black and white as you describe it. I know he has been pouring out corn since deer season has been open by his own admission. Is there corn on the ground today?

I should make it a point to talk to him I agree and I will.

As for thinking the deer belong to me because of a picture LOL I've never thought that.

Regardless, that type of pressure will put a stop to it whether they find corn on the ground or not.

Start cutting open the stomachs of every deer everyone kills when you get it. Most corn has already been harvested if there are any corn fields around. So if there's yellow gold inside the stomach it will confirm your suspicion then you could take it a step further.

And tumbtacking dryer sheets to trees would be unethical and probably ineffective. I know what you are getting at, but two wrongs don't make a right. Turn it in and let the wardens do their job.

Isn't hunter harassment illegal not to mention unethical? I would call gw or try to talk to the guy.

Although they were primarily unsuccessful (a very common theme when it comes to baiting), my neighbors baited heavily for years. I finally got fed up with it when they started to pour the corn on our shared property line. So I called the GW. No more problems (other than bad relations with my neighbor) after that.

Just to repeat what several others have said if you KNOW for a fact that he is "baiting" then let the people who are paid to deal with it know. The person could be telling he is "baiting" just to get under your skin and the fact could be that small piece of property is the magic spot we ALL try to find. And as far as dryer sheets and the sort that is the tactics of anti-hunter groups. IMO there are only 2 choices that a mature adult to choose from and they are to either make the call or deal with it.

Baiting is illegal, but simply killing deer on his little 1 acre of land isn't! If he's baiting turn him in, if not just chalk it up to bad luck!

We have a guy who claims every year to kill the biggest bucks off our lease. He has a 5 acre plot that touches our 500 acres. He claimed to shoot a big 9 pointer this year. Both of the big 9 pointers that we had on camera this summer were harvested by us. He killed something else. Eyewitnesses over the years have said he exaggerates alot too. Our landowner worked closely with the TWRA this year to bag two road hunters.

You will probably just have to learn what routes the deer are traveling to and from his property and set up cameras. If they are regularly going onto his property, which they probably would without corn, set up on them.

I smell hunter harassment by means of sabotage using dryer sheets!

What if this guy is just telling you he's baiting, and really isn't? Maybe he's telling folks this just to get under your skin, and you're letting it work.
It's always easy to blame others for our own short comings! I can't see ALL the deer on an 800 acre tract leaving to go hang out on a 1 acre tract because there happens to be a small pile of corn there! If you're not seeing deer on 800 acres, how could it possibly be the guy with 1 acre causing it?

LOL...Never been acused of being a mature adult and he isn't just saying it. I am happy he killed the deer just not happy with the methods he is using. Don't recon I am blaming him because I suck at hunting either. :) I wouldn't have shot any of the bucks he has killed anyway. To my knowledge no one on the lease mad about him killing deer.

As far as the dryer sheets probably not a good idea just throwing it out there. Could make some sort of case for poacher harassment maybe. Unethical hmmm keeping the deer from walking down to a corn pile that's pretty thin if you ask me.

Believe I will personally talk with him and let it be known where I stand and what might happen if he continues.

Keith, I believe I'd just let the GW handle it. If you let him know you're onto him, then, have to call the GW, he's going to single you out from the rest of the lease members with resentment. I'd just let the GW do a walk thru if it were me in this case. Good luck!

One acre is pretty small. I would think you could find travel routes from your land to his acre and "cut the water off".

Nearly every deer that's been killed on my place has had corn in its stomach, none on my place or the lease, about 775 acres, that I know of or have ever seen.
