Last night I was able to get to KY for the last two hours.......I was shooting my wife a text to let her know I was safe in the tree when I hear footsteps....hadn't been on stand but 5 minutes....I look down and here is a doe....then a second deer, a forkhorn in velvet. Forky was a no go....didn't buy a NR tag to shoot a forky....so I set my sights on the doe....they fed around me forever....no clue that I was there, I actually drew back 4 different times to shoot her, but each time she would change and give a bad angle, I told myself if it was meant to be that I would get the shot.....well it happened, she was at 20yds, perfect broadside shot, she mule kicked and tore out of there, I was certain I had heard her crash. I decided since it was early that I should sit tight and see if a monster came through at last light....well nothing else showed....so at darkness I climed down, consolidated all my gear....went over to where I shot her. I found my arrow, the blood was dried...I found a couple drops of blood, I searched for a while....very little blood...not what I was expecting for shot placement, though I thought I heard her crash.....I didn't just do a grid search at night time, so I decided to come back the next day.
I got back to KY in the late afternoon, went to wear I saw the last blood spot....decided to follow the trail....went 10 yds forward and looked to my left and she was laying dead in some blow downs. The first thing that I noticed was the gaping hole ....... but it leads to the question.....why no serious blood trail? Obviously if I had gotten right down I think I would have found her....but to me, blood sticks out better at night because it shines....maybe it was my eyes....maybe the blood soaked into the ground....
Anywhooo, deer recovered....was surprised how cool she was when I gutted her....luckily with cooler weather and her being in the shade helped.
I won't go back to KY again until Halloween weekend....I still have my "extra tag", but my focus will be a buck in the pre rut/rut leading up to rifle season.
Might have to find time to go to Ft Campbell and fill some doe tags.
