B&C Entries: Sharp Decline

Has anybody considered that some people may not want to pay or go through the hassle to be in a record book? B&C is not the only authority on deer or trophy hunting.

It just goes to show you that a free range buck with a symmetrical 170 inch rack is still very rare in spite of all the education on food, nutrition, management and hunting techniques. It probably always will be.

It's not that big a deal or that expensive. After it's dried and officially scored, you complete an affidavit, take some pictures and mail it all in with a $25 check. At least that's what it was 8 years ago.

Not that I have ever killed anything even close to B&C standards, but I have never taken the time to put a tape measure to any deer that I have ever killed... Although I did believe that it was more expensive than $8

Im sure there are some that go unaccounted for, but I would say statistically the numbers are reliable. Especially with TV, internet and magazines more and more people want to share their trophy and be recognized for it or at least know that they can enter it into the books.

I sure would like to get my name in there.

I would love to take a B & C buck/s. I'd measure it, show off pictures of it, and tell the tale of it's demise as often as I got the chance. I still wouldn't enter it into the books. I'd venture to say that if the record books only admitted the animal and omitted the hunter entirely (and it's basically set up to applaud the animal) that there wouldn't be half the animals in there as now present.

Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas look to be tearing it up with their antler restricted buck limits.

Mississippi - 3 buck limit with antler restrictions on all 3 bucks
Arkansas - 2 buck limit with antler restrictions on both bucks

Insufficient data for most of Tennessee. Must be the statewide 3-buck limit....

Point here is this: there are more considerations than just B&C entries. If The MS hunting experience is what it takes to get B&C entries in the southeast, they can freaking have it.

Look at the map in the linked story. Just about the whole state of MS is dark green. It seems they are whacking and stacking the B&C entries statewide down there due to the antler restrictions on all bucks.

Regardless, why is TN one of the red-headed stepchild states with insufficient data? No respect!

I never entered my B&C. Just due to the fact of having to do all the above mentioned. I was basically happy with the local recognition of such a great animal.

Many or most of those MS entries come from high end, exclusive hunting clubs.

A lot do, I agree.. Especially in the delta & Black River area around Madison..

.....Otherwise, you're hunting scrub bucks in the pine belt with a massive doe population and deer dogging galore....snip......With a super high obesity rate, you may very well have the laziest hunting culture that exists in America. Slob hunting rules and, as a result, the hunting experience for the average hunter can SUCK. Dogs, 4 wheelers, lack of law enforcement, poaching, trespassing are rampant. Political influence on game laws and management is significant and corrupt (MS arguably has the most corrupt politics in the U.S.)

dang, that's painting a pretty pathetic picture of us MS hunters. I think you need to venture out into different areas if that's how you think MS is everywhere ! Hunting is something revered by almost everyone I know from MS.. 90% of us have all our teeth, are in decent condition (even good enough for a diy elk hunt every year).. Believe it or not, we all don't run dogs & hunt from the blacktop road ..

Next time you see him, hand him a stick and have him draw you a picture of it in the dirt. If he can't, it didn't happen. :lol:
