Yesterday, I posted a pic of a jawbone asking opinions on age. Not that it's terribly important but wanted some feedback.
So anyways, the day...
I got to hunt with my son, he is 23. He moved out when he was 18 cuz he thought I was the dumbest person ever. Super long story short, he has burned all his bridges and now lives in Tennessee with my mother. He text me a few weeks ago and asked if when I come up for gun season if I would bring the .44 so he can hunt with it. It's a 1963 carbine that everyone in my family wants lol.
Anyways I bring it up and he was pumped to go hunting and even bought all the appropriate gear. So we head out at 515 in the morning and I put him in my favorite stand. The deer where all over me but I refrained from texting him just in case he experienced the same.
At 635 he calls me. I'm thinking man, I hope he's ok. I answer it and he's like hey dad I just shot a deer. I think it was a spike. I tell him I'll head that way but just sit still and wait. I get there he shows me where it came from and how it ran 5 feet from the stand. We blood trailed it maybe 50 yards and I see it another 30 yards away, piled up. Dang thing looked rather large body-wise for a spike. I asked him if if he was sure it was a spike and he was... we get to it and and one side was busted off and it maybe has a 3rd point he could count.
Get it to the house and put it on the scale and it says 145 pounds.. and the nose was still touching. Very odd for a so called spike. Anyways, this is what got me to try to age the deer. All the young spike we have shot in the past were 95 pounds. This deer was solid. But seemed kind of leggy so I was thinking maybe 2 1/2.
Either way, awesome hunt with my son. The old
.44 did it again. It seems like whatever you point it at, gets dead.

Been a banner year at the farm in Clay country. This was the 9th deer I cleaned since muzzle opener and we only hunted that weekend and then the start of gun season.
