I know this subject has been beat to death, but I have some land with mountainous terrain, in some areas I cleared out 5 years ago I planted autumn olive it does't seem to be taking over but I'm thinking of cutting them down. Has anyone had benefits from these? When I planted them I was told they were good for deer.

Deer absolutely love them, and they provide excellent cover for all manners of critters. I studied them for several years and found the same thing you did, that they do not spread in the mountains. However, folks here have experienced the exact opposite.

I have no problems with them, but keep an eye on them to make sure they do not take over the world.

Many WMA's do this as well along field edges joining roads, seems to work well for that!

They are in invasive in some areas.
