not really true on the inertia system unless you are looking at the older model stoegers (early model M2000)

for starters you should know that no shotgun will cycle all loads all the time, at some point there will be a jam but thats just part of it and part of keeping it clean and in good shape.

comes down to what you want to spend as your original question has a wide variety of options. I am a benelli man personally and I have not had any issues shooting light dove loads to 3.5 turkey loads from my SBE2 and i have shot a bunch of them. The Vinci line seems to get a lot of praise for cylcling them all with the inline inertia it uses. Franchi is also a great gun backed by a very good warranty from benelli.

Again there are more then a few options that come highly regarded by guys i know have shot a lot from include the Sx3, Versa Max and Browning Maxus just depends on what you want to spend and what fits you.

Let me add a little. I am experienced with using shotguns, shoot doves several times a year, been turkey hunting a long time.


I've always used remingtons, but they suck now. I have a newer 11-87 Sportsman Superamag that is pure garbage, other than just a regular turkey gun. I was just thinking about getting in the market again, and wanted a gun that cycled bird shot and turkey shells, most of the time. I also want to be able to shoot 3.5".

I still use about a 1970 model 1100 for all wing shooting, and im sure it has jammed before, but I can not remember it happening. I also have an old 11-87 that came out in 87, with a three inch chamber, that is probably the best gun ever made imo.

I want to shoot 3.5, because some reason I feel like im shorting myself if I dont, even though my 1100 2-3/4" used to be my turkey gun.

Bottom-line is, wanting a gun that I can dove hunt with, as well as turkey.
I may have to go the three inch route. I could and do still use my old guns, but id rather not use them much anymore.

Instead of buying a $1,500 shotgun, I'd rather ask for opinions of you.

Like i said i am benelli man so you can look at those, the SBE2 is a dream and if you just want to save a bit of money and shoot 3" look at the M2!

another cheaper option that is growing in popularity is the Weatherby SA-08, it comes with a gas ring you can change out for light loads then change back to the heavy loads come spring for turkey or fall for ducks. It doesn't fit me all that well and it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles on it but it is a great shooter for sure.

I always wanted a sbe2, but dang they expensive. Probably why Benelli and Browning Still makes good product, while Remington has gone the way side.
I have also been looking at the Affinity 20 gauge (for me) but to tell my wife its hers so I can get one.

I shoot an SBE 1 and love it, though it will have an occassional hiccup. I've had to replace several small parts over the years. I've sho the SBE II and it is really solid. One of my best friends has a Vinci, and he has had to break it down in the blind 5 or 6 times that I've seen in 2 years. He's selling it now. Maybe his is an outlier, but on a top of thinking they're ugly, I wont be buying one ever. No real experience with others.

Like others have said, none of the autos will cycle 100% of the time. Too much recoil and too many moving parts. thats why I keep an 870 for a back up gun.

Further... If you can still 1 1/8 oz loads in the dove fields you shouldn't have any problem with any above mentioned guns..
With all this being said, the new Versa Max is supposed to be the cat's meow.... I have no experience with it tho..
People will disagree but I do not believe the SBE2 is as good a gun as the original H&K SBE... Just my personal opinion.

I have a pair of H&K SBE 1's. Best auto gun I ever shouldered. I have broke a few parts but Benelli replaced them free no questions asked. Trick is finding one that hasn't had the guts blown out of it. I have seen some that I couldn't believe were still shooting. I replaced the recoil springs in both of mine with magnum springs and they only cycle heavy target loads and up, but most of my shooting is magnum loads. If anyone has a 1 with a 28 in barrel I have one with a 24 I'd trade

A buddy bought one right before we went on a duck hunt back in December. While at camp we started shooting skeet and his would not cycle light loads and he was pissed. He was gonna take it back but I haven't asked him if he did or not.

VERSAMAX...any load, any where, every time. They mean what they say. If you ain't got one, your missing out point blank and period...lol somebody is gonna disagree :tu: but I've seen for myself. Ran just bout everything through this gun never had one hiccup.

I've had a Beretta 390, Beretta A400 Xtreme, Benelli SBE1, Winchester SX3 3.5
Shot 1 ounce factory dove loads through all of them. The A400 would cycle 7/8 ounce loads with authority. I'm sure it would have went lighter
My favorite was the Benelli.

I have a 1187 super mag that I broke in with heavy dove loads broke it down and cleaned it really well and now it'll shoot anything I put in it. I have read about other people having trouble but I like mine. With that being said my buddy has the Versamax and it's as smooth a cycling and sweet a shooting gun as I have ever shouldered.

I like the SA-08. I use mine as my everything gun except for turkey and waterfowl. I'm sure it would work fine but mine is the Deluxe model. Its too pretty to beat up.

We all shoot SBE2"s. We run 3-4 cases a duck season thru them. Flawless. I've tried all the gas guns, don't have time to clean a gun every two boxes of shells. We start in duck season, then follow the geese into early March. Crawl ditches, lay in layouts, gun stays dirty, use as boat paddle. Mine will cycle anything I shoot in it. The blueing is worn completely off my receiver. They cost more, but the design is simply the best. As long as they make em, that's what I'm shooting.

Haha I literally dropped my SBE2 in the bottom of a pit filled with 2 feet of water and mud right at shooting light. Ended up having to shoot it all morning in the 20degree day. Fired every shell no questions asked
