I have owned my 4 wheeler for about 3 yrs, bought it from a man I work with who bought it from his brother, who bought it used from a Yamaha dealership. I don't have a title for it and neither does anyone as far back as I can trace it.

Anyway heres the thing, last wendsday night I got pulled over by a sheriffs deputy in Coffee county who told me they had been told to pull over anyone with a 4 wheeler in the truck and check them out, seems alot around there have been stolen lately. Anyway he told me I need to get a title on it in my name, they ran the VIN # on it and thankfully it didn't come up stolen. He gave me the mans name and address who last had it registered which was about 10 yrs ago. Tried to track him down but had no luck, seems he moved since then.

Is it correct that I am requiered to have a title and how would I go about getting it if no one knows where the original title holder is at.

Seems the Yamaha dealership would have took care of the title swap for the man who bought it from them if it were this important. I never knew they had titles, I have owned several and never had one.

You will have to apply of a lost title, usually at the main office location of your states DMV. If you have the original sales receipt it makes things a lot simpler, but it can be done without one. I will probably take 5-7 weeks before you see one, maybe longer.

They are not cheap either.............but it is cheap insurance to prove it does belong to you, if stolen. And you did mention there are a lot being stolen................

bought a 3 wheeler 1 time with no title, county clerk took all the info & $,said if a problem somebofy would contact me & if no problems the title would be there,a few weeks later it came.i have a title for my bought new 2 me in 03 honda in my bilfold.at 1 time twra required a sticker on your ride to show you paid taxes on it.they now dont enforce that & you can steal it today & ride it there tomorrow :) .reckon they have enuf work trying to enforce game laws ect...i wouldnt buy any thing now without a title, have seen several things for sale on craigs list ect that stated no title but a bill of sale.

ATV's have titles?
I've got a receipt from the guy that I bought mine from, but no title.
I don't think that any of my friends have titles for theirs either.
Does the state issue these, or the county?

OK, I googled and found out that in TN you are supposed to take your receipt and title to the DMV to get a registration sticker.

I guess I need to find out who to talk to about a lost title.
I wonder if the state will collect sales tax on the purchase price, even if it was a used ATV purchased from an individual?

Well, the clerks office said that I can't apply for a lost title, since the ATV was never titled to me to begin with. She said I needed to go to the person it was last titled to and get the title from them. I know that this ATV was sold at least 3 times. The guy I bought it from says he didn't get a title for it either.
So it looks like a lost cause at this point.
They've not asked me for it before now, so maybe they won't in the future either.
I would like to have the title to it, though.

ATV's come with "certificates of origion" only if you pay your tax to the man do you get a title, the certificate of origion and a bill of sale will make it good to go with the LEO but most folks loose or don't keep the Certificate

My four wheeler has a title that came with it,but I did buy it out of virginia and they seem to be a butt about everything over there. I thought everybody had a title with their 4 wheelers Though. Till now!! I wouldn't buy one myself without a title. It is to common for thief's to steal and sale them.
