So who thinks throwing spears/atlatls should be legalized in Tennessee if you do not agree, state why.

Same here.

The old tools like atlatls and longbows are neat to use.

I'd sooner like to see the sling bow legalized where you could shoot an arrow with a 50 pound draw out of a slingshot that is super compact and easy to instinctive shoot. I've never shot one or an atlat'l, but the latter sounds like it would be tougher to master and result in more crappy shots by people who just wanted to hunt with one because it was legal. I dont know it's just my 2 cents. I just think the slingshot bow is pretty cool and could be very effective and easy to carry around the woods and easy to shoot in tight spaces.

are we talking about atlatls for deer hunting?????? good luck with that....I am not seeing many people that will be skilled enough to throw a dang spear at a deer and hit one....if an atlatl is what Im thinking of anyway....now for hogs yeah id love to try if you had someone with dogs to bay them up....id like to see a corn pile the size of a football field with a huge bomb in it and let every pig in the state come eat and blow them to heck......

I could go for the slingshot bow as well...that might actually be fun and instinctive shooting is fun although I haven't done it in a very long time...

I'm for it, as long as you sign up it will be your only weapon......

But of course it will end up being more wounded deer that are not recovered

is an atlatl the spear that you throw using a stick or some type of throwing device? I swear I just don't see someone going through the range of motion to throw a dang spear at a deer and actually being successful...maybe I would be surprised...im sure there could be instances you could catch a deer looking away and get all wound up and sling something but there is gonna be some considerable noise that goes along with that movement that would make a deer flinch bad especially at the close distance it would need to be....

As long as you can bench press 250lb, that's the minimum strength for an ethical kill in my opinion.

What are you basing that on? The two factors in a throw are angle of release and velocity squared. When throwing a spear, or pretty much any object, the arms and upper body are actually not the primary generator of force. The upper body follows through with force generated from the lower body. If your minimum strength test were applied to throwing spears, footballs, shot puts etc, then a spear thrower or the quarterback would be able to generate just as much force seated as they would when standing. Also, following this application, a powerlifter with a 500+ lbs bench press should be able to outthrow the best shot put athletes as well as Tom Brady, who most likely lacks an impressive bench press, but that is not the case. Throwing is technique of learning to fire the body's muscle systems to create speed.. The design of the Atlatl allows the thrower to generate more velocity than just chucking a raw spear. More than likely, most able bodied adults with minimal athletic skills are capable of generating enough force with an atlatl to kill a deer. The question at hand would be are the developed enough with their technique to do this consistently with an acceptable level of marksmanship.

Missouri is the state with a Atlatl season: http://www.riverfronttimes.com/newsblog ... ive-weapon

Note that I am not making a case of an Atlatl season.

It was a joke. Lol

Haha, I was thinking about minimum draw weight so I went with strength, probably should've gone with mph minimum, but it would've been taken too seriously.

Oh and I'd try it IF I had the time to practice and become efficient enough with one to kill a deer. I know I could do it, but I'd have to find the time and place to practice a lot.

The problem is I think many would try it because they thought it would be cool, but would not be efficient enough to humanely kill a deer, thus there would be more deer lost.

I might agree with you except I don't see many people making their own or buying one.

If they were readily available for purchase at your local sport shop or Bass Pro, you might have a point.
