I want one. Dont know squat about them. Not looking to break the bank, probably wont ever shoot it much but i want one. I would like one in 7mm/08 caliber. Any advice would be appreciated. Dont even know where to start. Thanks in advance.

A assault rifle by definition is capable of fully automatic fire so it's doubtful that you'll find one in 7mm-08. It's illegal for civilians to own one that wasn't registered before 1986. You're gonna need to go through a class III dealer and get the background checks and pay the appropriate taxes for a Class III weapon. Plan to spend several thousand dollars for the weapon.

Todays M-4 is semi-fire and 3 shot busts, no full auto. But you need a Class III for the 3 shot bust.
An "assault rifle" has different meanings to different people. Most assault rifles are semi-auto and come in 5.56,(223), 7.62 (308) and 5.45. Some of those semi-auto assault rifles are better than anything the US military has. They can go from as little as $800 up to $5-6,000 depending on what you want.
Go here for anything you ever wanted to know about assault rifles. These guys shoot thousands of rounds a year.

If your just wanting a assualt rifle, and don't wanna break the bank. Get a cheap AK47,AK74. But I'd spend the extra cash and get a AR-10 or AR15.
Panther has some good guns for cheap, around 950 out the door at my local gun shop. in .223 of course.
He also has a Panther AR in .308 with a bull barrel for 1099.

HogBear is correct. An assault rifle is capable of selective fire by definition. That can either be burst fire or full auto fire. Semiauto look alikes are not assault rifles although the liberal media has been putting that info out so much that most people are fooled by their deception. The first assault rifle is generally considered to be the German Stg 44 Sturmgewehr firing the intermediate 8x33 round. It was shorter, handier, and carried a high capacity detachable magazine. Of course it was a good idea and all the others followed--- AKs, ARs, Steyr Aug, and on and on.

I cringe when I hear the word "assault rifle."
You can build an AR15 from scratch for a lot less than you can buy a complete one. I've built several AR's in the last year (not all of them were mine) from scratch and was able to save a few hundred on each one. If you want a rifle to suit your specific needs I would go that route. They are really not that hard to put together.

Maybe assault rifle was the wrong terminology. Something along the lines of ar type gun was what i was talking about. Not fully auto just semi automatic.

I wouldn't suggest building an AR15 to someone who has never owned one or knows nothing about them. There is just to much that can go wrong if you don't have the right tools.

The AR15 buying frenzy seems to have settled down a bit. There are a lot of good deals showing up on AR15.com now. You need to read and get familiar with the AR then make an educated decision what you want. There are numerous different models, manufacturers, and accessories for the AR15. Spend some time reading and learning over at AR15.com and you wont be sorry.
