I want to give it a shot this year. As I understand it, asparagus, once established, will last for many years. I want to make sure I plant the right asparagus crowns. Any recommendations for a tasty and hardy variety? Thanks.
 
It's a perennial and will go for years. I love the stuff. Get it in the ground and let it get established that first year. With luck, and the help of small birds, it will reseed itself regularly.

I always keep my eyes peeled for roadside clumps of the stuff.

do you find it often in the wild? never really looked for it myself. Not a big fan of eating it
 
Wife and I love the stuff. We have had a bed in our yard for years. I think Martha Washington was what we started with. Once you eat it fresh from the garden, you will not be satisfied with any that you buy at the grocery store.

I do see a lot growing in ditches in my area, but it is usually too big to be decent eating.

I did when I learned the art in Illinois. I had a short stretch of country lane where I could fill a Walmart bag to the seams on a good day.

Best time to locate it is after season as it gets big and "ferny". I made myself notes and put them in the glove box, then the next spring would run the route and see what was up.

All I can say is that there is nothing that tastes like fresh garden asparagus. But be prepared to wait a good couple of years for it to take well. I understand it takes a while to develop a quality bed. As to variety, I have no suggestion.
