Deer rifle

I have both... I have a PSA AR 10 and a Ruger M77 in 7.62 while my Ruger is a super accurate rifle out to 300 yards I would not have a problem taking my AR 10 out there either as I can ring 8" steel very consistently out to 400 yards ... I guess it depends on if you are a traditional guy that likes wood furniture or like the modern sporting rifles as the AR are called.. but you do have a lot quicker follow up shot with the AR

This may be the hardest gun decision I've ever made, lots of pros and cons to both weapons

I like carrying the AR in bad weather or through the brush. I have no fear in it getting wet or beating around. Mine is 6.8spc though [emoji6].

If it's raining I tear my bolt gun down and clean/oil it. My AR I stand upside down and let her drain out, clean it after season [emoji16]. Don't have to worry about any rust, wood swelling, etc

I have both.. a ruger American 308 and a dmps ar10 .. I'll pick the bolt gun 10 to one.. my ar 10 has a big heavy stainless barrel on it and a huge scope.. just way too much to lug around deer hunting.. very seldom do you need the second shot so fast.. unless your a poor shot..

An AR mag will also hold 4 rounds. I don't understand the assumption that someone carrying an AR plans on shooting the woods down.

no one said anything about shooting the woods down lol. Other than home defense I don't see much use in an AR.

We're getting a little off track here, but there is no better tool for home defense than an AR.

I disagree.. a shotgun with birdshot is the best.. at 10-15 feet away it will blow someone into.. and if you were to miss.. the birdshot will not travel through a wall and kill a member of your family sleeping in the next room..

I have both a bolt and a semi 308. I went the HK route with a G3 clone. Have taken deer at 350+ with it. Only carried a 5 round mag. Really, only take it out for close to home since it weighs a ton. Really prefer my bolt for walking.

Trauma makes a point about weight. They may not all be heavy, but the AR10s I've handled and shot all were hefty. I'm a fan of the AR platform, and for hunting, but my current vote is for a light weight and accurate bolt.

For deer hunting there is no contest - a bolt action. The AR is superior of course for firepower but you don't need that to deer hunt so I see no need for putting up with the clunkiness and poor handling that an AR offers. The receiver is too thick to carry easily, it slings your brass all over the woods (matters only if you reload) and isn't near as fast to bring to the shoulder and get off a fast shot for me. Maybe if you practice exclusively with an AR you could get fast, don't know.
