What height rings would I need on an AR with a 40mm scope? I figured it would have to be taller since the rail runs the full length of the top instead of taper off like a bolt rifle. I generally like to mount a scope as low as possible on my rifles but this is the first AR I have messed with and I had rather not buy a few sets just to figure out what will work.

Agreed on the 1 piece. I've taken a liking to Burris PEPR. Have em on both of mine.

I'm running a Nikon Ar mount and a 40mm scope on mine with no problems or issues. Not a lot of clearance but plenty. Got it on sale and with a coupon for less than $50.

Gave that one to my son, so now I'm hoping on another coupon and sale.
 
I've got one Burris PEPR and one Nikon M223 mount, both on flat tops but not monolithic. Both mounts have been great. Great height for propper eye allignment, and the cantelever style to get the propper eye relief. Any that are made similar to these should do well.

Nikon makes one and two piece mounts, you need cantilever for eye relief on a standard flat top rail and to clear the charging handle. It gets aaagggrivating reaching under a scope for the handle, cantilever cures that. It doesn't sound right, but, you need the scope mounted higher and forward on an AR because of the stock angle being straight back, if that makes sense. Works for me! YMMV
