AR question...

Although I've owned a few ARs over the years, I've never messed much with them...so, forgive my ignorance...please!!

How do you "un-stake" a staked castle nut on the buffer tube? I need to remove the nut to add a sling attachment point.

You'll need a vice and a lower receiver block then 42 ugga duggas with your castle nut wrench. Actually most of them can be broken free with some force but not a ton. If it is not moving, heating it a bit may help.

Pure hate and muscle. Actually, I have found that you can put a punch in one of the grooves on the nut and give it a whack to get it broken loose.

The staked points aren't usually hard to defeat with the castle nut wrench.

Proper wrench and a rubber mallet was my last go around, put a single sling bracket on then took it off after I bought a upper with a 24" barrel, they are tite

The last one I built I used a magpul asap qd sling mount as the end plate. I tried to stake it into the castle nut but it was a no-go. The end plate is too hard - it would crack before it would stake . So I just torqued the castle nut against the plate without staking. Then I read that is what magpul says to do.

The reason I'm mentioning this is because even unstaked it hasn't budged and removing it will be easier if I ever have to do it. Might be an option for you when you reassemble.

I have assembled many. I don't remember actually staking any.

If you torque properly to 40 ft lbs, you likely won't encounter a problem. I stake my castle nuts, but I don't feel it's absolutely necessary.
