AR/M4 suggestions

My son is currently building up his "gun" account and looking to buy an AR/M4 type rifle after he gets XD 40. Ive not done any research into the brands, just suggested the M4 flattop over the AR style, this will be more of a plinker, SD, SHTF gun. Any suggestions on what brand to go with and more importantly what brands to avoid and why? This will be several months down the road so definitely not looking to buy at the moment.
 
Build one. That's what I'm fixing to do in the not too distant future. I have an AR and love it. Looking on youtube and other websites, It does not seem too difficult. I have 2 coworkers that build their own and say it's relatively easy. This way he can get what he wants versus what's available commercially.

I used to recommend building your own as I have built many AR's, however I do not recommend someone building their first one. I think factory build and warranty should be a factor in his choice. That way you can get some trigger time behind one and figure out what features you like and don't like. If he then wants to build one, his factory gun will sell better than a self build, and he can build one as he pleases.

The 6920 is what.?? Sorry I haven't keep up with the AR buzz in the last 20 yrs or so. I do have experience with the old A-1 and the A-2.
 
I have been looking for a AR-15 also and the options are so plentiful that you don't know what to choose from!!.

My first AR is one I built. By building, I have learned a TON about the AR platform as well as shooting in general.
