If I take the front site post off of my ar....do I have to replace it with a gas block? Sorry if this is a dumb question, black guns r new to me

yes if you take it off it has to have another gas block.
i wanted a low profile gas block on my last one and took it off .used a dremel to cut it down and put it back on. then put a free float hand guard over it.
look at ar15.com under "build it yourself" for pics and step by step directions . also you tube videos will cover it

What they said, i personally would get a gas block with a picatinny rail incase i wanted to re mount a iron site.
