What shops in the Middle TN area have a nice selection of AR parts? I'd like to start on a build but take my time buying parts piece by piece.

I would much rather shop online for some stuff just so that I can find exactly what I want. But how do I purchase parts that require an FFL?

Just to clarify, the only part of the rifle that requires an FFL transfer is the stripped lower (serialized component). The lower parts kit (LPK) which includes the fire control, bolt catch, mag release, grip, etc. can be shipped to your door as well.

If you're looking for recommendations on parts, there are several of us who own and have built rifles. You won't just build one

I found me a lower yesterday...a buddy and I worked it out for me to get it. I'll be starting my build soon.

Looking to build a mid-long range AR to serve as a plinker, back up deer rifle, varmit hunter and SHTF resource...probably in that order (hopefully).

Thanks for the clarification. I looked at a complete lower (without butt stock) on Midwayusa.com. Of course they said I needed an FFL. Then I looked at a stripped lower and they said I needed an FFL for that as well. That threw me for a loop.

I think I want to put the lower together myself but buy a complete upper. Upper construction seems to advanced for my skill set.

A lot of little springs and detents to go flying. Get an extra spring and detent kit in case you lose one. They are inexpensive and you will have a spare. Also be careful with the ears on the trigger guard they break off easy.

That sounds like a good plan. There are certainly a few specialty tools required to build an upper. If you're looking for a fine trigger, I'd recommend a Geissele. Enjoy!

Here's the upper I think I want. I wanted a quad rail fore end in order to add accessories. I also wanted a 16" barrel as I didn't want a huge bulky rifle. The flip up sites are nice as well.

Any other recommendations?

If you haven't already bought the stripped lower, Spikes Tactical makes some top quality lowers and have some with pretty neat engravings (zombies, Punisher, fire selectors that read "dead-undead-live").
