On a varmint/coyote AR with a 20" or 24" barrel, what would be the better twist 1:8 or 1:12, price is the same for either?

I have read where the 1:8 doesn't really like the 55gr bullets.... seems like most of the factory varmint ammo is around the 55gr.
 
Get the 1/8 twist. It will shoot everything from 55-75gr with ease. You may want to shoot the heavier bullets sometimes. And if you don't....well that's ok too. Wind will blow 55gr bullets around a lot. I would look for something in the 69gr range that it likes.

I don't reload.... probably won't for now.... just don't have the time or money to play around with it.

If you don't have the money to do it the right way now you may want to just save up and wait til you do....just sayin :grin:

Thanks for asking, I had the same question. The 55gr pills are cheaper so that's what I'll be shooting the most but I'd like to option to launch the long ones from time to time.
With out hijacking your thread can you spin a light bullet too fast? Something like a 40gr in a 1-9 to 1-7 twist?

Sometimes You can have to much twist for lighter bullets. The thin jackets on some will blow apart. I shoot 55gr XM193 in my Colt with a 1/7 twist all the time and have no problems but that is the lightest I have shot.

Is there any reason not to use Match grade ammo when hunting....? I can't seem to find all that many factory offerings in that weight.... except for the match grade JHP's.
 
Good to know then..... may have to talk my uncle into loading me a few rounds to try... if the factory stuff doesn't pan out.
