Seriously considering purchasing one. what is a good name and what do I need to look for as far as barrels and twist. right now I want only the basic, nothing too fancy.
 
There are many choices to be had. You have to ask yourself what you want it for. If you are going to be shooting ALOT a chrome lines barrel is a must as they last longer but they are not as accurate. If you shoot for accuracy then a non chrome lined barrel would have more accuracy but not last as long. If you don't like cleaning then a piston operated style would be better, but parts would be an issue. There are many choices to suit your needs.
 
I have five AR-15's, 3 old Colts and 2 Bushmasters. In my opinion they are the best, but that's just me. There is a Bushmaster in the classifieds section that is a pretty fair deal.
 
I agree make sure the barrel is chromed lined 1:9 twist. I own 4 DPMS's
Remmember it is a battle rifle platform. Without dumping money into it. Don't expect a tac driver with a collaspable stock and stock upper and lower retaining pins, or that $15 piece of crap accu wedge. Making a stogk rifle shoot sub minute of angle groups takes work and $. If you are looking for a standard rifle to plink or home defence. Bushmaster, DPMS, Remington, S&W, and the list goes own. shop wise before you buy. And try to stay from "bubba's" garage built guns.

I have a Bushmaster 16" 1:9 twist in M-4 configuration. Love it. Once you go Black, you will be hooked. Starting basic is just that, a starting point. May as well go all in. Go Carbine length, flat top upper, and start adding goodies.
 
Supply is quickly outrunning demand and prices are coming down. Word is that distributors are telling retailers to sell what they have because their backordered stuff is coming fast. Waiting a few more weeks will see better deals.

Ok. Question. Aren't "most" all the lower units made by 4 manufacturers anyway and they just stamp different names to them?

I heard Colt lower is actually made in Nashville by Sabre Defense, then put together in China by Colt?

Armalite is other manufacturer that actually makes their lowers.

Somebody out there actually know the real truth to all this?

I know this list is on AR15.com
I have seen this before when I was looking into why these rifles are so popular, but do ALL these names on this list MAKE lowers, surely not. What I have heard is say Sabre makes them for Colt, Rock River, Double Star, Daly, whoever, and puts their mark on it. Armalite makes lowers for themselves and who know who. Just like say Amana makes freezers for Sears and puts their name on it.

Surely there are not that many tool and die places turning out that many units? If there are that many manufacturers then I doubt there would be a shortage even with a war going on, and a citizen demand. That list is more than the MANY different companies that made MI Garands during WWII .
