I am sorry, as I am sure this is not a new question. I just can't find an official link to the answer. I have a friend that bought a AR-15 .223 and wants to take it deer hunting. I was under the impression that .243 is the smallest caliber to deer hunt with in Tennessee. Is the .223 legal for Tennessee whitetail, and if so in the AR-15 model? Is there a magazine limit for the AR-15 if so? If it is legal, when did this change? I moved to FL for about 10 years and am back in TN now, so I am thinking it maybe changed recently? Anyone have a link for this info? Thanks.

Everyone knows you cant kill a deer with a ar15 .223 .. uh.. dont tell my 135 inch 11 pointer..lol..

I always laugh at people who claim a 223 is not big enough for deer. All u have to ask them how much is the avg weight of a Deer is and the avg weight of a person. Then ask what the cal of the common rifle for combat. That is when they get the dumb look and you want to just say here is you sign.

Now if I was in bear country and I had one I wold rather have the ar with the largest mag I had.

I have a Bushmaster M-4 but it is only a 100 yard gun. Give me a bolt rifle for 300 yard shots. I know that you could put a heavy barrel on an AR and accurize it a million different ways but why bother? .223 is a 100 yard man stopper that will probably end up getting replaced with the .300 AAC Blackout or the .300 Whisper. You could kill a deer with a rock too but there are better alternatives. I guess if you are cash strapped and need a home defense/hunting package in one platform go nuts.

Well I am a little old and getting fi rgetfull but if I remember when I qualified on the m16 we shot out to 300 yards. Now I know the other rifles are better then the m16. My brother would use a bolt 223 for long rang all the time. It is not my first choice if I was shooting long shots in a field. That is why I carry a 308

Well it is not a good deer cartridge but it can definitely kill one.

Makes an even better elk cartridge though :D
