Apple tree ?

Whats up with this tree?Verry little leaves,its an Arkansas Black. Another ARkansas Black,not 50 yards away looks great.Any Ideas?

Odd you ask, because I have one doing the exact same thing only mine is a winesap. It is also my only tree that is doing this. Not a possibility of herbicide damage on my end. The only thing I can figure about mine is that it is planted in a fairly wet area...probably too wet honestly, and I bet one of these years the tree may die it's that wet. Is yours by chance in an area prone to being too wet? Just curious if we have any similarity there between our trees.

possible,but I doubt it.I sprayed it yesterday,rained over night Im guessing,if I did get a little gly on it,all this rain will take care of that???

Now that you mention it,it could be a winesap,Ive planted so many now Im forgetting,but its not in a wet area,thats not it.

Did it have leaves on those branches prior to this this season or bare all Spring?

Did you look inside those curled up leaves? It could be an insect pest like an aphid causing the leaves to curl. Have you sprayed any pesticides on the trees this year?

It is possible that you killed off the natural predators of the aphids that are now causing damage. They will be down inside the leaves that are curled, making spraying next to impossible, unless you uncurl each leaf and spray inside them.

See if there are aphids inside the curled leaves. Also look for ants going up and down the tree tending these aphids.

Sorry, not to hijack, but speaking of ants...I've always had a problem with them. What can I do?

Where are the ants? Are they large ones tiny ones? The type of ant determines the control method.

They are tending aphids for the sugar they produce. Kill the aphids and the ants go away.

Should the neem oil kill the aphids you're referring to? This is my first year using it and my first application was about a week ago.

I should also post a pic of my Winesap that looks like FH's tree (they're twins) but it was that way before I sprayed.

The problem with killing the aphids is getting the treatment to them. They are down in the curled leaves. Yes it will kill them...even a soap solution will kill them, it is just very hard to get it on them without uncurling the leaves and spraying inside them.
