I Am planting some apple trees on my property this winter. I have done some research on them and come to 4 species I want to plant, they are Yates, Arkansas black, Freedom, And Horse apple. Is this a good variety? Does any body have experience with planting apple trees... any advice with this would be greatly appreciated...
 
How big would my (orchards) need to be to be effective? And would I need to mix the different species all together or just a couple species here and then a couple more there?
 
What do you mean by effective? You could have as little as 2 trees close to another and be producing apples. I would be sure to have a good pollinator in each group. Freedom is a good pollinator, as well as Horse.

When is the best time to plant apple trees? Also whats the best location? Will they make it at the edge of any field or do they need more light in the wide open? Where do you get your trees from? THANKS

JMO,but the more sun the better,I plant em on the north side of fields.

More Sun the better, they will live in an edge just wont do as well. I like planting now actually. But Ive planted anywhere from now til April. My favorite two sources are Adams County Nursery and Century Farms Orchards.

Great Thanks! Whats the best mix to plant together that you've found? How far apart do you plant them? I would like some of the trees that drop as late as possible.
