Anyone Try to Trap Rabbits?

Sometimes I hear about guys trying to trap rabbits. Anyone here do this? I've seen those box style traps before as well as the cage style ones you can buy from TSC or the Co-Op. Seems interesting.

You can catch them in box traps, either the Haveaheart or homemade ones. I'm guessing the season has to be open, I'm not sure about it though.

Better check on the TWRA forum. I think you are only allowed to trap rabbits that are a problem.
I've caught many of them in snares. Back in the hills of KY. Dad was overseas with the war. We didn't have much money.She'd be pretty happy when I'd bring us home a meal.

i tried when i was a kid with no luck. i was using a live cage trap from co-op. i used pears for bait ended up catching a bunch of groundhogs, which was fine with me. love killin them groundhogs. ive caught a bunch of coons in cage traps as well when i had a young coon dog to fool around with. if you catch a coon be careful when lettin em out had a 16# boar try to climb up my leg.

I've got a buddy in SC who built a rabbit pen for training purposes. He contacted Wildlife Management down there and they gave him traps since he was building rabbit habitat and not just killing them. To go that route you'll probably have to tell them why you want to trap them.

I have trapped them when i was a kid. Its quite difficult only got 1. Fresh carrots and lettuce worked.

Rabbits may be trapped during the open season for rabbits. Traps need the name and address of trapper. Animals caught during legal trapping must be immediately killed. Non target animals released.

Squirrels, raccoons or other animals may not be trapped for dog training purposes. There is no trapping season for squirrels.

i remeber my dad made me some rabbit traps out of hollow logs,talk about a natural look.Those things looked great.

I made a homemade box trap as a kid. Caught my first rabbit, let him run out into an onion sack. Then I couldn't bring myself to shoot him. Seeing him cornered and quivering just didn't seem like fair chase anymore. Let him go, gave the box trap away.

Try regular live animal traps , baited with a combination of lettuce , carrot , or celery mixture. It will bring them right in.

Trapped a polar bear once, but that's a different story.
Rabbits, i always made homemade hollow log traps.
Loved it too, i need to get back into trapping again.

my gradpap would make a box trap out of baccer sticks,it was pyramid shape with about 1" between the slats,set it on a old piece of tin,the trigger was made out of 3 pieces of stick notched in the places they crossed in the shape of a 4,stick a piece of apple or tater on the end,the diag part of the trigger holds 1 side up & put the bait towards the back,if you catch a grinner or a skunk its easy to release with a long stick so you dont get attacked,make sure you have slots in it so you can see what you have trapped & can shoot it or run :) ,mike243
