Is there anyone left shooting round balls? Everyone I know has purchased one the modern in-line muzzle loaders and shoot the new projectiles. I don't see many posts on this site about side lock rifles either. Does anyone know of a site where there is a good exchange of ideas on shooting the replica black powder rifles?
 
There are some members that do...and I'm sure that some one will chim in eventually... :grin: Some actually would rather use full traditional and some claim excellent results with the round balls. Its been a while since we had a topic about round balls but there has been some talk when comparing bullets and loads... You'll get a response from someone, I just can not remember who... You also might try doing a search in the topics for "traditional" or "round balls" under the muzzle loading forum... :wink:
 
Hickory Nut, I still hunt some of every year with a side lock. First muzzleloading deer I ever killed was with a side lock and a round ball. I like the modern in lines, but I just like guns. I am and will probably always be partial to the old side hammers.
 
Just won an auction on Gunbroker for a Hawken reproduction 50. I'm thinking the Savage might get a vacation this year. I haven't owned a traditional open sighted cap lock in almost 15 years. Time to get back into the swing of traditional black powder. Now off to find me some black powder supplies and perhaps a bullet or ball mold.

Not anymore. I got out of that a while back. I got into duck hunting some time ago and now cast my own decoy weights. When I get this rifle I plan on casting my own projectiles again. I've used the lyman and the Thompson Center molds before and will keep an eye out again for a set.
 
i have a 1 in 66 twist .45 i am totally refinishing. never shot it yet but it will be using patched round ball. my other i will be using CVA deerslayer bullets. i'm re finishing the barrel right now. .50 cal bullets 300 gr to see if they work or not. both are side locks percussion caps. CVA sharpshooter .50 cal and a miroku ultra-hi .45 still a lot of work to do on it yet.
 
Yep, I'm still shooting roundballs and black powder in an old sidelock.

I'm using a .45 flintlock with patch & ball. When weather is damp I go back to my inline. Looking forward to some dry weather so i can use the flint.
 
I have used nothing but a Flintlock for over 25 years now.. used to shoot a lot of competition before eyes started going..I have used it in Anascoti Island in horrendous snow storms.. I never put it away when it gets a bit damp!! I have made what they call a calfs Knee to cover my lock and it works very well.. If taken care of properly it will fire under all conditions.. She has killed everything i ever asked of her.. from Bear in Maine to Elk in Montana.. I make all my own balls and weigh every one of them..all of them need to be within 3-4 grains of each other... to be super accurate you need to keep everything the same.. You should see the looks i get when using my micrometer to check thickness of material in sewing stores..If i can be of any help just give me shout...
