Just came across a deal on one and have no idea about recoil, I have read it is not a bad deer caliber but need to get something that won't make a new shooter recoil shy. Between it and a 243 which would you pick if the same price ?

Pick the one that has the lowest price, and most available shells.
 
Love my 25-06. Little to no recoil. Shells are a little pricey compared to .243, but aren't they all these days. It's about as easy to find 25-06 as .243 in stock anyway. Academy in Franklin has the best prices on 25-06 that I've found on the shelf.
 
I've shot a 25-06 for over a decade and absolutely love it. It is extremely accurate, has plenty of kill power, and barely kicks at all. I've never had a .243 but I have no hesitations in recommending the 25-06.

I have one and I love the cartridge. I will admit to taking my Savage ML quite a bit more often than the 25 for a couple of reasons. My 25-06 is picky. It will shoot 1 inch groups but I tried 3 different brands of cartridges to get there. Also, a box of them is $30+ and mine doesn't like the cheap stuff go figure. On that note the 25 ammo is more expensive in general. If cost per shot is a consideration a 243 or a 30-06 is a much better choice as they are always on the shelf here and cheapest ammo to boot.

On one more thought the 25-06 is not the long range rifle everyone would like it to be. It is quite long range enough for me with enough oomph to take a deer at my shooting limit of around 400 yards. I say that because after researching for loading supplies and looking up ballistic charts for the bullets and reading more about the 25 the bullets just don't have the BC or SD to get it done at longer ranges.

If recoil is your main concern then a 243 or even a 7mm-08 would be awesome. Both of those can shoot at least as far a 25-06.

Saying all that I still love my 25-06 and will only get rid of it to get another!
 
I love mine. I've had a couple different ones. I have a rem 700 Classic in 25-06 presently. It was the first rifle I ever bought new and like a dummy I sold it. Luckily, I was able to buy it back a couple of years ago. Right now, I'm shooting the federal premium w/117gr Sierra gameking. It loves that load and deer hate it. I made my furthest shot ever with it last year on a doe at 305 yds. Bang flop.

I will add that I've shot several different 25's over the years that were mild shooters, but for some reason my 700 will absolutely kick the daylights outta you!!!! Especially so for a load that shouldn't have much recoil!!!

I would love to find a safari grade BAR in 25-06!!!!
 
Both my sons shoot 25-06. One is 9 and the other is 12 and they've never complained about any kind of recoil. My youngest shoots an h&r single shot with a youth stock. Oldest is shooting a TC Encore Pro Hunter with the thumb hole stock. Both are tack drivers but they do like the better grade ammo. I used a 25-06 for the last 12 years and only put it down because I fell in love with a sweet 270 wsm.
 
Thanks guys, I picked up the 25-06 this afternoon. H&R Ultra Varmint with Tasco 40mm 3x9 scope and 10 bullets for $225.00. Been shot very few times. Now to go on the ammo search and stock up on some to check sight and get ready to play with it soon as the grandson who I got it for shows up.
 
No question here...none. 25-06 hands down. 110gr Accubonds in either DoubleTap or Winchester (black box w/red letters) deliver sub 1/2 minute. Handloads yield even better groups (at distances that border on the insane).

Lethality...fuhgitaboutit.

I've had that exact same gun and wish I'd never sold it. Partial trade for an 300 ultra mag. That didn't last long and went back to the 25.
That gun was the most accurate centerfire rifle I've ever owned. It was the quintessential "tack driver". It would shoot any load you put in it. Never saw a gun do that since. Congrats! You'll love it!!
 
I got one, an A-Bolt that I got new in 1984
Killed a lot of deer with it, but got it mainly for groundhogs
You not going to double lung a big deer and watch it drop, I learned if you want the dropping you got to high shoulder them.

Very accurate gun, flat shooting too
but it caused me to move up to 30 cal guns
