Anyone hunted Idaho?

A buddy and I are talking about doing our first DIY elk hunt next year. He's been looking at St. Joe National Forest and Clear Water National Forest.
Anybody hunted these areas (or any others for that matter) and have any advice?

We're looking for a place where we could get a hotel room and be within 30 to 45 minutes from where we'll hunt. We can bring 4wheelers or side by side if needed.

I bear hunted in Clearwater for years. It's steep and rugged with thick woods. There are plenty of meadows to glass in the higher elevations. There is a couple of small motels in Lowell that will serve your purpose.

I hunted the panhandle. Very thick. Saw a few didn't get a shot. Lots of fun
