Recently amended legislation allows for a judge to impose enhanced restitution fees for illegally killed or possessed trophy deer. For white-tailed deer with at least eight, but not more than 10 antler points, the fine is $1,000 per animal, plus $500 for each antler point. For a white-tailed deer with 11 or more antler points, the fine is $1,000 per animal plus $750 for each antler point.

Wow I had no idea. That's stiff penalty. That would be a total of $36,250 if he harvested the 47 pointer killed in Gallatin this year.

Reckon it was part of the trophy rulings passed, shoot a spike lots cheaper :rotf:

I really like that law but think it should have a clause for lesser deer also. There is no excuse for poaching and this helps but smaller deer should be better protected too. This is a great first step but we need to change the definition that TWRA uses for poaching. Their idea of poaching is what I called poached. We should change it to anyone caught on the wrong property with any hunting weapon, You can get a free map 5 days a week at the DA and that is close enough to keep you legal. You can always get help form game warden and/or call landowner.
