Anyone else seeing......

....the deer hitting the fields hard right now, despite all the acorns falling? Our exclusion cages show the oats and wheat 5" lower outside the exclusion cages! Friday evening we saw a 115" buck in a field for over 20 minutes tearing up the oats. After seeing that and the exclusion cages, thats all the evidence I needed to hunt the fields on the first opening evening. I saw 7 in a 3 acre field the first evening.

Theoretically, they shouldnt eat this stuff until the first frost, but they sure are now. Though I will say that years we have limed and the following 2 years after liming, the deer consume EVERY BIT of what we plant, even when its late season forage and there is plentiful good quality acorns available.

Either way, I like it. I know where to find them in the morning, and know where to find them in the evening. Just thought it was a bit odd this early.

Interesting on the differential in sightings. I know that the white oaks are spotty and I saw a few dropping, but thare was just a couple acorns that had fallen. The majority of the whites that have acorns should start dropping their remainder crop anytime now. The next couple weeks will probably show a decline in the fields, if I were putting my money on it.

I have seen them in the fields quite a bit. But that is driving off Old Hickory beside Percy Warner park so that doesn't count. I plan on getting in the stand for the first time this weekend.

Seen 20 deer Saturday in the clover and oats. 4 of which were mature bucks
