any thoughts on 17 hornet

i am thinking about buying a 17 caliber for varmint hunting .I am think 17 hornet would be better than 17WSM but the difference in the price of shells and avalibility may change my mind.Any one have one that would shed some light on the subject.

Personally I prefer the .223 for varmint hunting...although a very quick shooting round with less noise and recoil the 17 loses (at least in my opinion) some down range stopping power on yotes...but if you are aiming for the ol brain I guess it won't really matter :tu:

A better place to put this post would probably be in the Predator Hunting section, but to answer your question, I have a .17 Hornet. I have shot the .17 WSM and it's pretty accurate, but the .17 Hornet is one of the most accurate cartridges I can handload. I doubt if either cartridge will be around in 20 years, but I'll still be able to shoot the .17 Hornet. The .17 Hornet has been a wildcat for a long time, too. I am amazed at how accurate the .17 Hornet is at 100 yards. I can keep 10 shots in a group smaller than a dime with change left over. The bullet runs out of velocity pretty fast, and I would not shoot at a coyote past 200 yards with it.

Jaybird, with in the arena of .17 to .22 caliber offerings, what do you feel confident WILL be around 20 years down the road?

The .17 HMR will be around in 20 years. It has enough guns in the market place to support the cartridge for a long time. The .22 Hornet and .22-250 will be around quite a while owing, again, to the number of guns, both new and old, available to burn the ammo. The 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem will be around until Jesus calls his flock home. The 5.45x39 Soviet will stick around forever, too, but finding accurate hunting rounds and reloadable brass could be tough. I don't know of any rifle manufacturer building .222 Remington rifles today, but there are a enough of them around to support ammo makers future production.

The 17 hmr isn't going anywhere and ammo availability is awesome.

I agree with pretty much everything he just said, the 22-250, 223, 22 mag, and 222 isn't going anywhere.

And savage has a rifle chambered in 222

I would go 223 or 22-250, but .17 will get the job done no doubt.

Depends on one's primary use for the gun.
My primary use for the A17 is as a "souped-up" squirrel rifle.
