Bought a Remington 700 SPS Stainless in 7mm-08 from a guy this year with a very low round count. I put leupold rings and bases on it, and slapped a Nikon Prostaff on it. I started shooting Federal Fusions and the gun would group no whwere near where it should, So I tried some Federal loads with Nosler Ballistic tips and Winchester Supreme Silver tips. The BEST i could get out of either was between 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards. Any Ideas on what I could try to get some confidence with this gun before Saturday??? Thanks

If rings and mounts are tight, I'd try a different scope.

Clean the bore and try a different scope.
Thats what I started thinking today... I just dont have the time or money at the moment to drop some money on a nicer scope.paincave_2000 said:

Not a nicer scope, just one that you know holds it's zero.
Clean the gun every time it goes to the range. Hopefully it is the scope thats causing bad grouping.Rubberduck270 said:
Stick with one load and shoot several. Sometimes it takes a few shots when switching for it to start grouping. If that doesn't help switch. After you find what you like quit cleaning out your barrel until after season.
Dang I hope it gets better, nothing worse than not having confidence in your rifle!!
Is it consistently off or all over the place? Sounds confusing but hopefully you know what I'm saying
Its always on, but all around my aiming point, It just wont produce a solid group.
It may be the gun. If it is a consistent wide group I doubt it's the scope. Usually scopes that are not holding zero have a very erratic pattern.
I had a 308 before that would not group anything better then 3" except 180grain ammo. Obviously I wasn't gonna shoot just 180grains so I sent it back to Howa and they agreed and replaced it.
I'd try and clean it very well and a few other ammo options. Won't hurt to try another scope to make sure that's not it though.
Are you shooting from a sled or a vise ?

I can't find out what the problem is.. I shoot it off of sand bags. And I can shoot my 700 Sendero in .308 and cut the same hole all day long from the same rest.REN said:
Sucks but you may end up having to call Remington and see if they will look at it from a warranty standpoint. Do you know they guy you bought it from? Did he have any issues?

Check your action screws and make sure they are tight. Check your barrel crown as well.
The guy who originally had it didn't do any group shooting, just sighted it in and hunted. It had 16 rounds through itREN said:

What everybody said, take the scope and rings off and tighten everything to spec. Don't go crazy with a brush in your bore. There's no need to brush the bore unless accuracy starts to degrade. I'd use a brush in this case.

Check to see if the stock is contacting the barrel somewhere it shouldn't. The SPS stocks I have are not very rigid. I replaced the SPS with a Hogue pillar bedded, and things tightened up considerably. Just a thought.
