Hey, I'm new on here and was just wandering if any grouse hunters were on here and how do think the upcoming season will be? I've talked to a few people who have seen some this year, but won't know til I get in the woods.
 
Not many grouse around anymore it seems. I'd like to hunt them, but the only time I see them in the woods is when I have a muzzleloader or rifle in hand, never a bow or shotgun.
 
I am moving to the west Knoxville area on November 1st. I have a 4 year old Elglish Setter that is good on quail. I just lost my black lab but that is another story. I would be very grateful for any advice on where to go hunting for any type of upland bird Tennessee has to offer.

I am moving from SW Florida. Again any advice or open spots would be greatly appreciated!

Gamekilla, the Cherokee Nat. Forest is where I'd start. I have heard from Spring turkey hunters in South Cherokee NF reporting hearing drumming. I hunt North CNF, but, I hear there is decent hunting close to West Knoxville. Note I said decent. It takes alot of boot leather to bag a East Tn. grouse. Good luck.
 
We are a secretive bunch but yes there are some of us grouse hunters around. To game: I would echo the mountains for grouse. If your able to get your dog on wild quail in east tn congrats.
 
Its been years since I've heard a grouse drumming around here, much less seen one, when I was kid they were common but just like the quail they seem to have dissapeared for some reason.
 
Use to hunt them in my 20s in Morgan Co. Lived in Greene Co. now for 18 years and have never been. I need to get out this fall and give it a try. Seems like better habitat here. Surely there must be a grouse or two around.
 
I have flushed about 5 grouse in my lifetime. They will give you a heart attack when your not expecting them. As for hunting them I think I would be better off playing the lottery :D
 
I play around with them a bit, or rather i let the dog run around the woods a bit. Havent had a chance to get out yet this year but saw quite a few birds out and about in the late summer. Seems like I am always behind on dog work as well. Start out with good intentions but now that the season is upon us I havent had the dog out and workin but one time.

Along with those intentions of dog work I bought a new pup. An english setter. She know sit and stay but i sure ment to have had her at least in the woods a bit more by now.

Oh well, we will have a good time walking the woods, birds or not

Its like they know exactly what ther do'n, you just about have to step on them before they take flite, & like ya said they scare the slobber out of ya.
