I have always wanted to fish this pier.

The spanish mackerel should be around in good numbers by now. Gotcha plugs on 20# spinning gear are a fun way to catch them. Be sure to tie the plug onto a 1-2 foot leader of 40 to 60# mono. Ocean fish do not mess around with gear.

Also squid spoons on a 3-4 foot leader attached to a 2-3 oz sinker can be killer too. Match the spoon size to the bait around the pier. Smaller is generally better. Too big will never get bit, but smaller will.

I always just walk the pier watch what people are doing and copy it. Most people are happy to share their fishing techniques.

Good luck,

For surf fishing get you a couple of surf rods 7' to 12' long spooled up with 15 pound line. Depending on how many rods you have, you will need a PVC pipe about 3' long with one side cut to a point to push into the sand if you are surf fishing to keep the sand out of your reels. Get you a couple of pompano rigs with 3 and 4 ounce pyramid sinkers and get some sand fleas. I catch them in the surf with my sand flea catcher. Shrimp work well too. If you want to catch sharks get a 6' to 10' steel leader and large pieces of cut bait.

Jetty fishing is fun too. Gotchas work great.

When you get there go to Half Hitch Tackle bait shop in west Destin. They will hook you up with everything you will need to have a good time. They have a website that is updated constantly as well.
