antlers falling off

I had 5 bucks on camera this week with one side already fallen off.seems kind of early,could the summer drought be a reason.

One of my yard bucks shed Friday night on our carport. I ran over it Saturday morning going to my sons game. Still had wet blood on base. I am soooooooooo glad it didn't ruin a new tire on my wife's SUV. He showed up Saturday one sided and I saw him this morning ( I think it was him) with both sides shed. His running buddy has dropped one side. I will post some pics of the broken antler

Same here. March and April are when bucks lose their antlers around my place. I think it's because those tiny little racks don't weigh enough to fall off. They are more like scabs and just wear off. :shock: :shock:

Always heard early shedding was a sign of some kind of deficiency??? That being said, I suppose as much as deer are "regionalized" in respect to the rut, scraping, etc that shedding timing could be the same way. If so, and if new antler growth stimulates that shedding, it looks like those bucks involved would have a longer growing season allowing for an increase in their sizes.

Just thought of something I don't remember ever coming across. With all the talk of deer farming I don't recall ever reading or hearing anything about antler drop timing. It would seem that with their nutritional intake, lack of a stressful environment, and non or limited involvement with the rut that they'd carry their antlers much later into the year. It would be interesting to know what that timing was with respect to that of the wild herds in the same immediate area.

We have very healthy deer that shed late December early January every year on our lease. That's just when they do in that particular area. A few hold later in February and March but not many.

That's interesting because I see a lot of folks in Franklin county area talking about their mid/ late December ruts, and that just don't jive with January antler droppage.

I'm still finding fresh scrapes where I hunt. I went scouting Sunday and found several fresh scrapes in a couple different locations on the property.

I got a picture of a one-sided buck last week. That's the 1st buck I've ever seen shed an antler before March or even April.

I found several places Monday (Jan 30) where deer had made scrapes using only their toes right under licking branches. They were like a normal scrap but nothing more than their toes had touched the dirt and the amount of area covered wasn't nearly as much as you'd expect with a scrape. I've never noticed this before.

EDIT: I need to look at that picture again to see if I can verify that the antler had dropped off or was broken off - obviously a big difference. I think the deer was facing away so not sure If it's even possible to be sure how the one antler was lost.
