Antlerless deer

Sitting here eating breakfast and looking through the hunting guide and I noticed this picture.

Got to thinking I wonder how many people are going to be kicking spikes off of deer,s heads are knocking spikes off heads in the woods to make them antlerless?

I've been told it's better on young, small-antlered bucks. ;)

Maybe this has been discussed but is a two inch spike in velvet considered a buck or anterless deer? If it is a buck, that's gonna make it even tougher to make a judgement early season.

Buck, page 23 of hunting guide. Exact verbiage states "Velvet antlered deer are also considered antlered."

Thanks Andy. I was trying to tell Allan that this morning after his talk at the Hunting Show and he was disagreeing with me. He said the antler had to be showing. i guess we all have some catching up to do.

Yes poachers will poach. The agency giving them an illustration of how to do so is puzzling to me though. They probably outta revise the guide and add a picture of the hammer as well.

At least it sounds like Ames won't count it as a buck or fine you for it. What the hunter does with the check in with TWRA is up to them I guess. But you're right, will definitely make for some interesting conversation.

Ames buck definition will follow the TWRA definition as far as checking it in and it counting as one of your statewide bucks, as well as one of your Ames bucks. With that said, they have added some verbiage to the contract to help alleviate some of the fines and penalties for some of the situations when members think it is a doe, but it has 1" antlers/nubs/etc. With an aggressive doe harvest like we have, there will be some mistakes, it just comes with the territory.

It's easier then ever for them now. Kick the spikes off check it in as an antlerless deer on there phone while hidden in the woods load it up take it to there buddies processing shop or processes it themselves. Never have to show or talk to anyone from the moment they pull the trigger till the deer is in the freezer. We would probably be stunned if we REALLY knew who many people do stuff like this.

In some scenarios it will count as a buck to the state but not a buck towards your Ames two buck limit. For example a 2 inch spike will still leave you with two Ames buck tags. One can be used as a guest tag if it's the first buck. Your gonna need a law degree to understand all these buck definition rules.

your right they don't even have to go through the trouble of kicking the spicks off to get away with it. Also right about it having 0 effect on anyone if you read what DA said, and what I agreed to, the same people that broke the rules before will brake the rules this year no change really. Just that it is a lot easier for them to do so now days compared to the ole days. When you actually had to drive your kill to a check station usually with 10 other hunters standing around at everyone all day running to look at what people are bringing in. When you actually had to get out, and talk to another human to check in your kill.

didn't say anything would change just that it is easier then ever for the ones that are gonna cheat to cheat.

the same group that cheated last year is gonna cheat this year. the same group that cheats this year will cheat next year and so on.
